Effect of Caregiver Education on Home-Based Care Practices among Adult Learners
Abstract
Caregiver education refers to structured learning opportunities through which individuals acquire knowledge, skills, and attitudes required to provide appropriate care and support to persons who depend on them, while home-based care practices refer to the activities and procedures carried out within the home to support the daily needs, comfort, safety, and general well-being of care recipients. Appropriate home-based care is important because many adults may provide care for family members or other individuals within their households. However, inadequate knowledge and caregiving skills may affect the quality and appropriateness of care provided at home. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of caregiver education on home-based care practices among adult learners. Caregiver education provides adults with practical knowledge and skills that can be applied when providing care within the home. Through structured lessons, demonstrations, discussions, practical exercises, and other learning activities, adult learners can acquire information about personal hygiene, nutrition, medication routines, mobility support, cleanliness, communication, and other appropriate caregiving responsibilities. Such education can help caregivers understand basic principles of providing safe and supportive care while responding appropriately to the needs of persons under their care. Home-based care practices refer to the routine activities undertaken by caregivers within the home to support the needs of care recipients. These practices may include maintaining personal hygiene, assisting with daily activities, preparing appropriate meals, supporting prescribed care routines, maintaining a clean environment, providing emotional support, and observing changes that may require appropriate professional attention. Caregiver education may influence these practices by equipping adult learners with relevant knowledge and practical skills for carrying out caregiving responsibilities appropriately. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will consist of adult learners who are involved in caregiving responsibilities and participate in selected adult education programmes within the study area. A sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure caregiver education and home-based care practices among adult learners. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of caregiver education on home-based care practices. The study is expected to establish that caregiver education has a positive effect on home-based care practices among adult learners. Adult learners who receive relevant caregiver education are expected to demonstrate better knowledge and application of appropriate caregiving practices, including personal hygiene support, nutrition, assistance with daily activities, environmental cleanliness, communication, and routine care. The findings may also identify areas of caregiving practice where adult learners require additional educational support. The findings are expected to have implications for adult education teaching and learning. Adult education programmes can incorporate practical caregiver education into relevant learning activities for adults with caregiving responsibilities. Demonstrations, practical exercises, case discussions, and supervised learning activities can help adult learners develop appropriate caregiving skills and apply acquired knowledge to everyday home-based care situations. The study will be significant to adult learners, caregivers, adult educators, families, community organizations, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from improved caregiving knowledge and practical skills, while families may benefit from better organization and application of appropriate home-based care practices. Adult educators and community organizations may also use the findings to develop relevant caregiver education programmes that address the practical needs of adults who provide care within their homes. The study recommends that adult education programmes should provide practical caregiver education for adult learners who have caregiving responsibilities. Adult educators should use demonstrations, practical exercises, discussions, and relevant case examples to develop learners’ caregiving knowledge and skills. Community organizations should also collaborate with adult education providers to make caregiver education accessible to adults who provide home-based care. The study concludes that caregiver education can contribute to improved home-based care practices by equipping adult learners with relevant knowledge, practical skills, and appropriate caregiving techniques.
