Effect of Adult Learning Programmes on Healthy Lifestyle Practices among Community Adults
Abstract
Adult learning programmes refer to organized educational activities that provide adults with knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to improve their daily lives, while healthy lifestyle practices refer to behaviours that promote physical and general well-being, such as balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, adequate rest, personal hygiene, and avoidance of harmful habits. Healthy lifestyle practices are important for maintaining well-being and reducing the risk of preventable health problems, yet inadequate knowledge and limited access to relevant health education may influence adults’ everyday health behaviours. This study will examine the effect of adult learning programmes on healthy lifestyle practices among community adults. Adult learning programmes can provide adults with practical information about nutrition, physical activity, personal hygiene, sleep, stress management, and other behaviours that contribute to healthier living. Learning may be delivered through health talks, group discussions, demonstrations, workshops, practical activities, and community-based learning sessions. These approaches can help adults relate health information to their daily experiences and develop greater understanding of how lifestyle choices influence their well-being. Healthy lifestyle practices involve the regular adoption of behaviours that support good health and overall well-being. Such practices may include eating nutritious foods, engaging in appropriate physical activity, maintaining personal hygiene, obtaining sufficient rest, and avoiding behaviours that may negatively affect health. Adult learning programmes can influence these practices by improving adults’ knowledge, correcting misconceptions, and providing practical guidance that can be applied in everyday life. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise community adults participating in selected adult learning and community education programmes. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure participation in adult learning programmes and adults’ healthy lifestyle practices. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult learning programmes have a positive effect on healthy lifestyle practices among community adults. It is expected that adults who participate in relevant learning programmes will demonstrate better adoption of healthy lifestyle practices, including appropriate dietary habits, physical activity, personal hygiene, adequate rest, and other beneficial health behaviours. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in Adult Education by demonstrating the importance of practical health-related learning for adults. Adult educators can incorporate lifestyle education into community learning programmes through demonstrations, practical exercises, discussions, and locally relevant examples. Such approaches can make learning more meaningful and help adults translate acquired health knowledge into everyday practices. The study will be significant to community adults, adult educators, health educators, healthcare professionals, community organizations, and providers of adult learning programmes. Community adults may benefit from improved knowledge and practices relating to healthy living, while adult educators may gain useful information for developing practical health education activities. Community organizations and healthcare providers may also use the findings to strengthen health promotion programmes targeted at adults. The study recommends that adult learning programmes should incorporate practical education on healthy lifestyle practices and provide adults with opportunities to apply what they learn. Adult educators should use participatory methods, demonstrations, discussions, and practical activities to encourage healthier daily behaviours. Collaboration between adult education providers and health professionals should also be encouraged when developing relevant learning materials. The study concludes that effective adult learning programmes can contribute to improved healthy lifestyle practices among community adults.
