Effect of Adult Learning on Adults’ Understanding of Pipe-Fitting Tools

Abstract

Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can improve their technical competence, self-reliance, and ability to perform everyday maintenance and vocational activities. Pipe-fitting involves the joining, installation, adjustment, and maintenance of pipes and related components, requiring appropriate knowledge of specialized tools. However, limited understanding of pipe-fitting tools may affect adults’ ability to select and use appropriate tools for different pipe-fitting tasks. This study will examine the effect of adult learning on adults’ understanding of pipe-fitting tools. Adult learning activities related to pipe-fitting may expose adults to different tools such as pipe wrenches, pipe cutters, pipe vises, threading tools, adjustable spanners, pliers, measuring tapes, reamers, and other equipment used in pipe-fitting activities. Learning may involve demonstrations, tool identification exercises, discussions, practical tasks, and supervised workshop activities. These learning experiences can help adults understand the functions, characteristics, appropriate applications, handling procedures, and safety requirements associated with different pipe-fitting tools. Adults’ understanding of pipe-fitting tools refers to their ability to identify, describe, classify, and explain the functions and appropriate uses of tools required for pipe-fitting activities. This may include understanding tool selection, handling, maintenance, safe usage, and the suitability of particular tools for specific tasks. Adult learning can strengthen this understanding by combining explanations with practical demonstrations and hands-on activities that enable adults to observe and practise the appropriate use of different pipe-fitting tools. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult learning, technical, vocational, or skills-development programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and a pipe-fitting tools understanding assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of relevant tools, functions, applications, and safety practices. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult learning on adults’ understanding of pipe-fitting tools. The study is expected to establish that adult learning can improve adults’ understanding of pipe-fitting tools. Adults exposed to structured learning are expected to demonstrate better understanding of tool identification, functions, selection, handling, maintenance, appropriate application, and safety practices. The findings may also indicate that practical demonstrations and supervised workshop activities enhance adults’ ability to distinguish between pipe-fitting tools and select suitable tools for specific tasks. The study will conclude that adult learning can provide an effective means of improving adults’ understanding of pipe-fitting tools. It will recommend that adult learning programmes provide relevant pipe-fitting tools, practical demonstrations, tool identification exercises, supervised workshop activities, and opportunities for repeated hands-on practice. Improved understanding of pipe-fitting tools may contribute to greater technical competence, safe work practices, self-reliance, employability, vocational development, and income-generating opportunities
