Effect of Adult Learning on Adults’ Understanding of Leather Craft Techniques

Abstract

Leather craft is a practical vocational activity that involves the use of leather materials, tools, and techniques to produce useful and decorative products. Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can support creativity, vocational development, self-employment, and income-generating activities. However, some adults may have limited understanding of appropriate leather craft techniques due to inadequate exposure to structured practical learning. This study will examine the effect of adult learning on adults’ understanding of leather craft techniques. Adult learning activities in leather craft may expose learners to leather identification, material preparation, cutting, measuring, stitching, joining, shaping, finishing, and basic product maintenance. Learning activities may include demonstrations, discussions, tool identification, guided exercises, and practical leather craft projects. Through these activities, adults can develop familiarity with different stages of leather craft production and understand how appropriate techniques contribute to the quality and durability of finished products. Adults’ understanding of leather craft techniques refers to their ability to explain and apply basic procedures involved in working with leather materials. This may include understanding material selection, measurement, cutting, stitching, joining, shaping, finishing, and the appropriate use of leather craft tools. Effective adult learning may strengthen this understanding by connecting theoretical information with practical demonstrations and opportunities for repeated hands-on practice. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected craft, vocational, or adult learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and a leather craft techniques understanding assessment designed to measure adults’ understanding of relevant materials, tools, and procedures. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult learning on adults’ understanding of leather craft techniques. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult learning may improve adults’ understanding of leather craft techniques. Adults exposed to structured practical learning are expected to demonstrate better understanding of leather identification, material preparation, cutting, stitching, joining, shaping, and finishing procedures. The findings may also indicate that practical demonstrations and hands-on activities are useful for helping adults understand and apply different leather craft techniques. The study will conclude that adult learning can provide an effective avenue for improving adults’ understanding of leather craft techniques. It will recommend that adult learning programmes incorporate practical demonstrations, appropriate leather materials and tools, guided exercises, and opportunities for repeated practice. Improving adults’ understanding of leather craft techniques may contribute to practical competence, creativity, vocational development, self-employment, small-scale enterprise development, and income-generating opportunities
