Effect of Adult Learning on Adults’ Knowledge of Tie-Dye Production Techniques

Abstract

Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire creative and vocational skills that can support self-employment, income generation, cultural expression, and productive participation. Tie-dye production involves knowledge of fabric selection, dye materials, folding and tying methods, colour preparation, dye application, pattern formation, rinsing, drying, and finishing. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of appropriate tie-dye production techniques due to inadequate access to structured practical learning opportunities. This study therefore examines the effect of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of tie-dye production techniques. Adult learning programmes can provide practical and creative learning experiences through demonstrations, guided practice, discussions, illustrations, and supervised production activities. In tie-dye production, adults can learn about selecting suitable fabrics, preparing dye materials, applying different folding and tying techniques, creating patterns, controlling colour application, rinsing dyed fabrics, drying materials, and carrying out finishing procedures. These activities can enable adults to connect theoretical explanations with practical experience and develop a clearer understanding of tie-dye production. Adults’ knowledge of tie-dye production techniques refers to their understanding of the materials, tools, procedures, pattern-formation methods, dye application processes, and finishing practices involved in tie-dye production. Adequate knowledge is important because poor fabric selection, improper tying, inappropriate dye preparation, and inadequate colour application can affect the quality and appearance of finished products. Adult learning may therefore improve knowledge by providing structured instruction, demonstrations, and opportunities for learners to observe and practise different tie-dye techniques. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult learning or vocational programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of tie-dye production techniques. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of tie-dye production techniques. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult learning has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of tie-dye production techniques. Adults exposed to structured learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of fabric selection, dye preparation, folding and tying methods, pattern formation, dye application, rinsing, drying, and finishing procedures. The findings may further indicate that practical demonstrations and supervised production activities enhance adults’ understanding and retention of tie-dye production knowledge. The study will conclude that adult learning can provide an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of tie-dye production techniques. It will recommend that adult learning and vocational programmes provide suitable fabrics, dyes, tools, practical demonstrations, supervised production activities, and relevant safety guidance. Strengthening these learning opportunities can enhance adults’ creative and practical knowledge, support vocational skill development, and improve their capacity to engage effectively in tie-dye production activities.
