Effect of Adult Learning on Adults’ Knowledge of Digital Illustration Techniques

Abstract

Digital illustration is an increasingly relevant creative and communication skill that enables individuals to produce visual content using digital tools and applications. Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and develop competencies that can support creative expression, employability, and participation in digital activities. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of digital illustration techniques due to inadequate exposure to structured learning opportunities. This study will examine the effect of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of digital illustration techniques. Adult learning in digital illustration may involve practical activities such as understanding digital drawing tools, creating basic shapes and forms, applying colour, using layers, manipulating images, and developing simple digital compositions. Through guided demonstrations, hands-on practice, collaborative activities, and practical exercises, adults can gradually develop familiarity with digital illustration processes. These learning experiences can provide opportunities for adults to explore creative software and apply digital techniques to simple visual projects. Adults’ knowledge of digital illustration techniques relates to their ability to identify, explain, and apply basic processes involved in creating and editing digital illustrations. Such knowledge may include understanding digital drawing tools, colour selection, layering, brush application, image composition, and basic editing procedures. Exposure to appropriate adult learning activities may improve adults’ understanding of these techniques by providing practical opportunities to acquire and apply relevant knowledge. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult learning or digital-skills programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and a digital illustration knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of digital illustration techniques. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of digital illustration techniques. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult learning activities may contribute positively to adults’ knowledge of digital illustration techniques. It is expected that adults exposed to structured practical learning will demonstrate improved knowledge of digital drawing tools, colour application, layering, image composition, and basic digital editing procedures. The findings may also indicate that practical demonstrations and hands-on learning activities are particularly useful for helping adults understand and apply digital illustration techniques. The study will conclude that adult learning can provide a useful avenue for developing adults’ knowledge of emerging digital creative skills. It will recommend that adult learning programmes incorporate accessible digital illustration activities, practical demonstrations, guided exercises, and opportunities for repeated practice. Adult education providers should also provide suitable digital tools and learning resources to support effective participation. Strengthening digital illustration learning among adults may contribute to creative development, digital competence, self-expression, and broader opportunities for participation in the digital economy.
