Effect of Adult Learning on Adults’ Knowledge of Community Library Programmes
Abstract
Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge that can improve their awareness and participation in educational resources available within their communities. Community library programmes are organized activities and services designed to promote reading, information access, literacy, lifelong learning, and community engagement. However, limited knowledge of such programmes may prevent adults from recognizing available learning opportunities or participating in activities that could support their educational and personal development. This study will examine the effect of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of community library programmes, with the purpose of determining whether relevant learning experiences can improve adults’ understanding of available library-based educational activities and services. Adult learning involves structured and experiential educational activities through which adults acquire knowledge, skills, and understanding based on their needs and experiences. In relation to community library programmes, adult learning may include reading activities, information-literacy sessions, community discussions, library awareness programmes, literacy workshops, and guided learning activities. These experiences can expose adults to the different programmes offered by community libraries, their purposes, participation procedures, schedules, and potential benefits. Participatory learning can also encourage adults to discuss their information needs and identify library programmes that are relevant to their personal, educational, or vocational interests. Adults’ knowledge of community library programmes refers to their ability to identify, describe, and understand the purpose and opportunities provided by different programmes organized through community libraries. This may include knowledge of reading clubs, literacy activities, information-literacy programmes, educational workshops, community discussions, and other learning-oriented activities. Adult learning can strengthen this knowledge by providing adults with accessible information and practical opportunities to interact with library resources and programme activities. Improved knowledge may increase adults’ awareness of available learning opportunities and encourage more purposeful participation in community library programmes. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult learning and community library programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of community library programmes. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of community library programmes. The study is expected to establish that adult learning has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of community library programmes. Adults exposed to relevant learning experiences are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of available programmes, their purposes, participation procedures, and potential educational benefits. The study is also expected to indicate that practical library activities, discussions, and direct exposure to programme information can make community library opportunities easier for adults to recognize and understand. The findings will have important implications for Adult Education practitioners, librarians, community educators, and managers of community libraries. Adult learning programmes can incorporate library-awareness activities, guided visits, information sessions, and practical interactions with community library programmes to strengthen adults’ knowledge. Librarians can also collaborate with Adult Education practitioners to provide clear and accessible information about programme schedules, participation requirements, and available learning opportunities. Such approaches can strengthen information literacy, encourage lifelong learning, and promote greater engagement with community library resources. The study will be significant to adult learners, community libraries, librarians, Adult Education practitioners, community organizations, and other stakeholders interested in lifelong learning and community education. It will recommend stronger collaboration between adult education providers and community libraries to improve adults’ awareness of available programmes and encourage participation. The study will conclude that effective adult learning can improve adults’ knowledge of community library programmes and contribute to greater awareness, participation, and utilization of community-based educational opportunities.
