Effect of Adult Learning on Adults’ Knowledge of Community Historical Events

Abstract

Community historical events are significant occurrences, experiences, and developments that have shaped the identity, social relationships, institutions, traditions, and development of a community over time. Adults need adequate knowledge of these events to understand their community’s historical background, appreciate its development, and recognize the experiences that have influenced present community life. However, limited knowledge of community historical events may weaken adults’ connection with local history and reduce their appreciation of community heritage. This study will examine the effect of Adult Learning on adults’ knowledge of community historical events. Adult Learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge through discussions, storytelling, oral history activities, community visits, group learning, documentary materials, and other experience-based approaches. These learning activities can expose adults to important events, people, places, and experiences associated with the history of their communities. Adult Learning can also encourage adults to examine historical information, share experiences across generations, and develop a deeper understanding of how past events have contributed to present community conditions. Knowledge of community historical events refers to adults’ understanding of significant events, developments, experiences, and changes that have occurred within their communities over time. Such knowledge may include awareness of important community milestones, historical experiences, notable developments, and events that have influenced local identity and social life. Adult Learning can strengthen this knowledge by providing opportunities for adults to interact with historical information, discuss local experiences, and connect past events with the present development of their communities. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of community historical events. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Learning on adults’ knowledge of community historical events. The study is expected to establish that Adult Learning has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of community historical events. Adults exposed to relevant learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of important local events, historical developments, community experiences, and changes that have shaped their communities. The study is also expected to indicate that participatory approaches such as storytelling, oral history, community-based discussions, and historical documentation activities can make local history more meaningful and accessible to adult learners. The findings will have implications for Adult Learning practitioners, community educators, cultural organizations, local historians, and programme planners. Adult Learning programmes should incorporate practical activities that enable adults to explore and discuss significant historical events within their communities. Storytelling sessions, oral history projects, community heritage visits, historical exhibitions, and discussions with knowledgeable community members may provide effective opportunities for adults to develop stronger knowledge of local history. The study will be significant to adult learners, community members, Adult Learning practitioners, cultural organizations, local historians, and communities interested in preserving their historical heritage. It is expected to demonstrate the value of Adult Learning in strengthening adults’ knowledge of historical experiences that contribute to community identity and development. The study will recommend greater inclusion of community history in relevant Adult Learning programmes and the use of participatory approaches for preserving and transmitting historical knowledge. It will conclude that effective Adult Learning can contribute to improved knowledge of community historical events and support greater appreciation of local history and heritage.
