Effect of Adult Learning on Adults’ Knowledge of Business Name Registration

Abstract

Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge that can support entrepreneurship, self-employment, and participation in formal business activities. Business name registration involves the process of formally registering a business name with the appropriate authority and understanding the requirements associated with business-name selection, application, documentation, and registration. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of the procedures and requirements involved in registering a business name. This study will examine the effect of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of business name registration and determine how structured learning experiences can improve their understanding of the registration process. Adult learning can provide practical experiences through discussions, demonstrations, case studies, guided exercises, and simulated business activities. In entrepreneurship-related programmes, adults can be introduced to important aspects of business name registration, including choosing an appropriate name, checking name availability, understanding basic documentation requirements, completing application procedures, and recognizing the importance of maintaining accurate registration information. Learning activities can expose participants to realistic registration scenarios and help them understand the sequence of activities involved in formalizing a business name. Knowledge of business name registration involves understanding the purpose, requirements, procedures, and basic documentation associated with registering a business name. Adults need to know the steps involved in selecting a suitable business name, confirming its availability, preparing relevant information, submitting an application, and completing the registration process. Adequate knowledge can help prospective entrepreneurs approach business formalization more confidently and reduce avoidable errors or delays. Adult learning may therefore strengthen this knowledge by combining explanations of registration procedures with practical examples and guided learning activities. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education, entrepreneurship, and business-skills programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of business name registration procedures. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of business name registration. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult learning has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of business name registration. It is expected that adults exposed to structured learning activities will demonstrate improved understanding of business name selection, name availability procedures, documentation requirements, application processes, and basic registration considerations. The findings are also expected to indicate that practical examples, simulations, and guided registration exercises can strengthen adults’ confidence in understanding the steps involved in formalizing a business name. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, entrepreneurship educators, business trainers, enterprise-development facilitators, and programme developers. Learning programmes should incorporate practical business-registration scenarios, guided application exercises, case studies, and discussions of common registration requirements. These activities can make learning more relevant and help adults understand the importance of formal business identification and proper registration when establishing enterprises. The study will be significant to adult learners, aspiring entrepreneurs, small-business owners, entrepreneurship training providers, and stakeholders interested in enterprise development. It will recommend that adult learning programmes provide accessible and practical instruction on business name registration and create opportunities for learners to work through realistic registration examples. The study will conclude that well-organized adult learning can improve adults’ knowledge of business name registration and strengthen their capacity to make informed decisions concerning the formalization of their business activities.
