Effect of Adult Learning on Adults’ Ability to Identify Reliable Radio Information

Abstract

Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to develop knowledge and critical information skills needed to participate effectively in an increasingly information-rich society. The ability to identify reliable radio information refers to the capacity to distinguish credible, accurate, relevant, and trustworthy information from questionable or misleading content presented through radio broadcasts. Since radio remains an important source of news, education, public information, and community communication, adults need appropriate skills to assess the reliability of information before accepting or acting upon it. This study will examine the effect of adult learning on adults’ ability to identify reliable radio information. Adult learning can develop information-evaluation skills through discussions, guided listening activities, broadcast analysis, case studies, group exercises, and practical evaluation tasks. These activities can expose adults to different types of radio messages and encourage them to examine the source, content, supporting evidence, purpose, and presentation of information. Learners can also be guided to compare different broadcast messages and identify characteristics that may indicate reliability or questionable information. Such activities can promote active listening and encourage adults to engage critically with information received through radio. The ability to identify reliable radio information involves examining broadcast content carefully and determining whether the information is sufficiently credible to be accepted. This may include identifying the source of a message, distinguishing factual statements from opinions, checking whether claims are supported by reasonable evidence, recognizing exaggerated or misleading presentations, and comparing information with other credible sources where appropriate. This ability can help adults make more informed decisions and reduce their vulnerability to inaccurate information. Adult learning may therefore strengthen this ability by providing structured opportunities for critical listening, comparison, discussion, and evaluation. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education, community learning, media-literacy, and continuing education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate radio-information evaluation assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to identify reliable radio information. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult learning on adults’ ability to identify reliable radio information. The study is expected to establish that adult learning has a positive effect on adults’ ability to identify reliable radio information. Adults exposed to relevant learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved ability to examine information sources, distinguish facts from opinions, recognize unsupported claims, assess the relevance of information, and identify characteristics associated with credible broadcast content. The study is also expected to indicate that guided listening, broadcast analysis, group discussions, and practical information-evaluation activities can strengthen adults’ critical assessment of radio information. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community educators, radio learning facilitators, media-literacy trainers, and programme developers. Adult learning programmes should incorporate practical activities that require learners to listen to different broadcast messages, examine their content, and make reasoned judgments about their reliability. Facilitators should also encourage adults to question information, seek supporting evidence, compare sources, and avoid accepting broadcast claims solely because they are presented through a familiar medium. The study will be significant to adult learners, radio audiences, educators, community organizations, broadcasters, and stakeholders interested in information literacy and lifelong learning. It will recommend that adult learning programmes incorporate critical-listening and media-evaluation activities that improve adults’ ability to assess radio information. The study will conclude that appropriately structured adult learning can improve adults’ ability to identify reliable radio information and strengthen their capacity to make informed judgments about messages received through broadcast media.
