Effect of Adult Learners’ Family Responsibilities on Participation in Continuing Education

Abstract

Adult learners’ family responsibilities refer to the duties and obligations adults perform within their households, including childcare, care of family members, household management, and other domestic commitments. Participation in continuing education refers to adults’ enrolment, attendance, engagement, and continued involvement in educational programmes undertaken to acquire additional knowledge and skills. Family responsibilities can place demands on adults’ time and availability, which may influence their ability to participate consistently in continuing education. This study will examine the effect of adult learners’ family responsibilities on participation in continuing education, with the purpose of determining whether family responsibilities influence adults’ involvement in continuing education programmes. Family responsibilities may involve caring for children, attending to household needs, supporting family members, managing domestic activities, and fulfilling other obligations that require regular attention. The extent of these responsibilities can vary among adult learners and may determine how much time they can devote to educational activities. Adults with substantial family duties may have to balance household obligations with class schedules, study activities, assignments, and other requirements associated with continuing education. Participation in continuing education refers to adults’ involvement in organised educational activities beyond their previous formal education. It may be reflected in enrolment, regular attendance, participation in learning activities, completion of assigned tasks, and continued involvement in a programme. Family responsibilities may affect participation by limiting the time and flexibility available for attending classes, completing learning activities, and maintaining regular involvement in educational programmes. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adult learners enrolled in selected continuing education programmes. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure adult learners’ family responsibilities and their participation in continuing education. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult learners’ family responsibilities have a significant effect on their participation in continuing education. It is expected that learners with greater family responsibilities will demonstrate lower levels of regular attendance and programme involvement compared with learners who have fewer family obligations. The study may further establish that the amount of time required for childcare, household duties, and family care influences adults’ ability to maintain consistent participation in continuing education. The findings will have implications for the teaching and administration of continuing education. Adult education providers may need to recognise the family commitments of adult learners when designing programme schedules and learning activities. Flexible class arrangements, appropriate scheduling, and learning activities that accommodate adults’ household responsibilities may help create conditions that support continued participation in education. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, continuing education providers, programme administrators, educational planners, and family support organisations. Adult learners may benefit from educational arrangements that recognise their family responsibilities, while educators and programme administrators may gain information for developing more flexible learning structures. Educational planners may also use the findings when designing continuing education programmes that respond to the practical circumstances of adult learners. The study will recommend that continuing education providers should consider the family responsibilities of adult learners when planning class schedules and programme activities. Flexible scheduling, suitable learning arrangements, and adequate communication of programme requirements should be encouraged to help learners balance educational and family duties. Adult educators should also provide reasonable opportunities for learners to remain engaged when family obligations arise. The study will conclude that adult learners’ family responsibilities can influence their participation in continuing education and should be considered in the planning and delivery of adult education programmes.
