Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Workplace Disciplinary Procedures

Abstract

Adult education provides adults with relevant knowledge and practical skills that can improve their understanding of workplace rules, responsibilities, and procedures. Workplace disciplinary procedures establish the steps organizations may follow when employees violate established rules or fail to meet expected standards of conduct. However, inadequate understanding of these procedures may create confusion about workplace expectations, employee responsibilities, and the processes involved in addressing misconduct. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ understanding of workplace disciplinary procedures. Adult education can provide learners with knowledge about workplace conduct, organizational rules, disciplinary processes, employee responsibilities, and procedures for addressing workplace violations. Through structured lessons, discussions, practical examples, and workplace-related case scenarios, adults can learn how disciplinary procedures are initiated, communicated, and implemented. Such learning activities can make complex workplace procedures easier to understand and apply. Adults’ understanding of workplace disciplinary procedures refers to their ability to identify the purpose, stages, requirements, and implications of disciplinary processes within an organization. Understanding these procedures enables adults to recognize expected workplace conduct and know how disciplinary matters may be handled when organizational rules are violated. Adult education is expected to improve this understanding by providing learners with clear information and opportunities to examine realistic workplace situations. The study will adopt a suitable quantitative research design. The population will comprise selected adult learners or workers, from whom a representative sample will be drawn. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to assess participants’ understanding of workplace disciplinary procedures, including workplace rules, disciplinary steps, employee responsibilities, and relevant procedures. The data obtained will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that adults exposed to relevant adult education demonstrate better understanding of workplace disciplinary procedures than those with limited educational exposure to the subject. Participants are also expected to show improved knowledge of workplace conduct requirements, disciplinary stages, employee responsibilities, and the appropriate processes involved in handling workplace misconduct. The findings are expected to have implications for adult education and workplace training by emphasizing the importance of providing adults with accessible knowledge about disciplinary procedures. Educators and workplace trainers can use case studies, role-playing activities, discussions, and simplified procedural materials to strengthen learners’ understanding. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, employees, workplace trainers, educators, employers, and organizations seeking to improve employees’ knowledge of workplace procedures. The study recommends that adult education and workplace training programmes should include practical instruction on workplace disciplinary procedures and employee responsibilities. Educators should use realistic workplace situations and clear explanations to help learners understand the purpose and stages of disciplinary processes. It is concluded that adult education can improve adults’ understanding of workplace disciplinary procedures and promote greater awareness of workplace rules and responsibilities.
