Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Workplace Career Pathways

Abstract

Adult education refers to organized learning opportunities designed to improve adults’ knowledge, skills, attitudes, and practical competencies, while understanding of workplace career pathways refers to the ability to recognize available career routes, occupational progression opportunities, required qualifications, relevant skills, and possible advancement options within the world of work. Understanding career pathways is important because it helps adults make informed decisions about employment, training, professional development, and future career direction. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of the qualifications, skills, and progression opportunities associated with different occupations. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ understanding of workplace career pathways. Adult education provides adults with learning experiences that can develop knowledge about occupations, workplace requirements, skills development, career progression, and employment opportunities. Through career-related discussions, practical activities, information sessions, workplace examples, and guided learning, adults can learn how different occupations are connected to educational qualifications, professional skills, entry-level positions, and opportunities for advancement. Such learning experiences can help adults understand the importance of continuous learning and skill development in achieving occupational progression. Understanding workplace career pathways involves the ability to identify different occupational routes, recognize entry requirements, understand progression stages, identify relevant qualifications and competencies, and distinguish between alternative career opportunities. Adults who possess this understanding can better recognize the steps required to enter, remain in, or progress within a chosen occupational field. Adult education can strengthen these abilities by exposing learners to relevant career information and helping them interpret the relationship between education, skills, work experience, and occupational advancement. The study will adopt a suitable research design to investigate the effect of adult education on adults’ understanding of workplace career pathways. The population will comprise selected adult learners, from whom an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured assessment or questionnaire designed to measure adults’ understanding of workplace career pathways. The data obtained will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on the identified understanding. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult education has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of workplace career pathways. Adults exposed to relevant learning experiences are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of occupational routes, entry requirements, relevant qualifications, skill requirements, and opportunities for career progression. The study is also expected to show that exposure to practical career information can improve adults’ ability to identify suitable pathways and understand the importance of acquiring relevant competencies for occupational advancement. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of Adult Education. Adult educators can incorporate career information and workplace-related learning activities into adult education programmes to improve learners’ understanding of occupational pathways. Career mapping exercises, occupational case studies, discussions with professionals, workplace information activities, and practical career-planning exercises can provide learners with opportunities to examine different career routes. Such approaches can make adult education more responsive to learners’ employment and career-development needs. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, employers, vocational training institutions, career guidance providers, and organizations involved in workforce development. Adult learners may gain clearer knowledge of available career pathways and the qualifications and skills required for progression, while educators may gain useful approaches for integrating career development into adult learning. Employers and training institutions may also benefit from adults who have a clearer understanding of the skills and educational requirements associated with occupational advancement. The study recommends that adult education programmes should provide learners with practical and up-to-date information about workplace career pathways. Adult educators should use career mapping, occupational profiles, workplace examples, and guided career exploration activities to help learners understand entry requirements, progression routes, qualifications, and skill requirements. Opportunities for career discussions and practical career-planning exercises should also be encouraged. The study concludes that adult education can contribute significantly to improving adults’ understanding of workplace career pathways and support more informed decisions about education, employment, and occupational development.
