Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Social Entrepreneurship

Abstract

Adult Education refers to organized learning opportunities designed to help adults acquire knowledge, skills, and competencies for personal, social, and economic development, while social entrepreneurship refers to an approach to enterprise that applies entrepreneurial principles to addressing social problems and creating sustainable value for communities. Understanding social entrepreneurship is important because it can help adults recognize how business activities can be used to respond to social needs while generating sustainable economic value. However, limited knowledge of social entrepreneurship concepts may restrict adults’ ability to recognize and explore socially oriented entrepreneurial opportunities. Therefore, this study aims to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of social entrepreneurship. Adult Education provides adults with opportunities to acquire knowledge through classroom instruction, discussions, workshops, practical activities, case studies, and experiential learning. Within entrepreneurship-related programmes, these learning experiences can introduce adults to concepts such as social innovation, social value creation, opportunity recognition, sustainability, stakeholder engagement, and enterprise development. Such educational activities can help adults understand the relationship between entrepreneurial activities and the resolution of social challenges. Understanding social entrepreneurship involves knowledge of its meaning, characteristics, objectives, principles, and potential applications in addressing social and economic challenges. Adults with adequate understanding may be better able to distinguish social entrepreneurship from conventional business activities and recognize how enterprises can pursue social objectives while maintaining financial sustainability. Adult Education can therefore improve adults’ understanding by providing structured opportunities to learn, discuss, analyse, and apply social entrepreneurship concepts to practical situations. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education and entrepreneurship-related programmes, from which a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure participation in Adult Education and adults’ understanding of social entrepreneurship. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a significant positive effect on adults’ understanding of social entrepreneurship. Adults who participate in relevant adult education programmes are expected to demonstrate greater knowledge of social entrepreneurship concepts, principles, objectives, social value creation, and sustainable enterprise practices. The study may further indicate that practical learning activities and exposure to real-life examples can strengthen adults’ ability to understand the role of entrepreneurship in addressing social needs. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in Adult Education by emphasizing the importance of incorporating social entrepreneurship concepts into relevant entrepreneurship and community-oriented learning programmes. Adult educators may use case studies, group discussions, community-based projects, enterprise examples, and practical problem-solving activities to help learners connect theoretical concepts with real social challenges. Such approaches can make social entrepreneurship education more practical, understandable, and relevant to adult learners. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, aspiring social entrepreneurs, entrepreneurship trainers, community development organizations, and policymakers. Adult learners may gain improved knowledge of how entrepreneurial activities can contribute to addressing social needs, while educators and trainers may gain useful approaches for strengthening social entrepreneurship instruction. Community development organizations and policymakers may also use the findings to support educational initiatives that promote socially responsible enterprise development among adults. The study will recommend that Adult Education programmes incorporate relevant social entrepreneurship concepts and practical activities into entrepreneurship and skills-development courses. Adult educators should provide learners with opportunities to examine social problems, analyse social enterprise models, discuss sustainable solutions, and apply entrepreneurial principles to community needs. Training institutions should also encourage practical learning that connects social entrepreneurship concepts with real-life situations. The study concludes that effective Adult Education can strengthen adults’ understanding of social entrepreneurship and improve their awareness of its potential contribution to sustainable social and economic development.
