Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Sign-Language Support Services

Abstract

Adult Education refers to organized learning opportunities that equip adults with relevant knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies for personal, social, and community development. Sign-language support services are services, resources, and assistance that facilitate communication and participation for deaf persons through sign language and related forms of support. Adults’ understanding of these services is important because adequate knowledge can help them recognize available support, understand its purposes, and interact more effectively with deaf persons. However, limited awareness may make it difficult for adults to identify appropriate support services or understand how such services promote inclusive communication. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of sign-language support services. Adult Education can introduce adults to different aspects of sign-language support through discussions, demonstrations, practical activities, and community-based learning experiences. Such learning may expose participants to the roles of sign-language interpreters, communication support, sign-language learning programmes, accessibility services, and other resources designed to facilitate communication. Adults can also learn about appropriate procedures for accessing support services and the importance of using communication approaches that respect the needs and preferences of deaf persons. Adults’ understanding of sign-language support services involves their ability to identify relevant services, explain their purposes, recognize situations in which they may be required, and understand how they facilitate communication and participation. It also includes awareness of the role of interpreters, sign-language training, communication assistance, and accessible information. Adult Education may strengthen this understanding by connecting information about support services with practical communication situations and providing adults with opportunities to examine how such services can reduce communication barriers. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education and inclusive-learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of sign-language support services. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of sign-language support services. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of sign-language support services. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of available support services, their purposes, appropriate access procedures, and their importance in facilitating communication with deaf persons. The study is also expected to indicate that practical learning experiences can increase adults’ awareness of communication support and strengthen their understanding of inclusive service provision. The findings are expected to have important implications for Adult Education practitioners, sign-language educators, inclusive-education practitioners, community educators, and programme planners. Adult Education programmes may benefit from incorporating information about sign-language support services into relevant learning activities. Discussions, demonstrations, case studies, communication exercises, and service-identification activities could help adults understand the functions of different support services and when they may be appropriate. Such learning can also promote greater awareness of inclusive communication practices. The study is expected to contribute to the understanding of the role of Adult Education in promoting awareness of communication support and inclusive participation. It is recommended that Adult Education programmes provide relevant learning opportunities on sign-language support services, communication accessibility, interpreting services, and respectful interaction with deaf persons. Such programmes should combine theoretical information with practical activities that enable adults to recognize and appropriately use available communication support. The study concludes that effective Adult Education can improve adults’ understanding of sign-language support services and contribute to more inclusive communication within communities.
