Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Portfolio Careers

Abstract

Adult Education has an important role in helping adults understand changing patterns of employment and career development. One emerging career pattern is the portfolio career, in which an individual combines different forms of work, professional activities, skills, or income-generating engagements rather than depending entirely on a single conventional occupation. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of how portfolio careers operate, the opportunities they provide, and the competencies required to manage multiple work roles. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of portfolio careers and determine how educational exposure can improve their awareness of alternative approaches to career development. Adult Education can provide adults with relevant knowledge about portfolio career structures, career diversification, multiple employment arrangements, freelance activities, consultancy, part-time professional engagements, entrepreneurship, and other forms of independent work. Through appropriate learning activities, adults can examine how different skills and professional interests can be combined to create sustainable career pathways. Education can also help learners understand the importance of identifying transferable skills, assessing available opportunities, managing different professional responsibilities, and developing continuous learning habits in changing employment environments. Adults’ understanding of portfolio careers involves their ability to explain the concept, identify its characteristics, recognize different forms of portfolio work, and understand the potential advantages and challenges associated with combining multiple professional activities. Adequate understanding can help adults make informed decisions about career development and consider employment pathways that reflect their skills, interests, and changing labour-market conditions. Adult Education can strengthen this understanding by providing structured information, practical discussions, career-oriented activities, and opportunities for learners to examine different approaches to building and sustaining a diversified career. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of portfolio careers. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of portfolio careers. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of portfolio careers. It is expected that adults exposed to relevant educational activities will demonstrate greater awareness of career diversification, multiple work arrangements, transferable skills, independent professional activities, and strategies for combining different career engagements. The study may further establish that increased educational exposure helps adults develop a broader perspective of career development and recognize alternatives to relying exclusively on a single employment pathway. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners, programme developers, and facilitators. Adult Education programmes can incorporate learning activities that expose adults to contemporary career structures and practical approaches to career diversification. Facilitators can use case discussions, career-planning exercises, skills-mapping activities, and practical examples of different professional pathways to improve learners’ understanding of portfolio careers. Such approaches can make Adult Education more responsive to changing labour-market conditions and the increasing diversity of modern career patterns. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, career development organisations, employers, and programme developers by providing insight into the contribution of education to adults’ understanding of emerging career structures. It is recommended that relevant Adult Education programmes include learning opportunities covering portfolio career concepts, transferable skills, career diversification, professional planning, and continuous learning. The study concludes that Adult Education can broaden adults’ understanding of portfolio careers and equip them with knowledge needed to make informed decisions about diverse and evolving career pathways.
