Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Indigenous Knowledge Systems

Abstract

Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge that can strengthen their understanding of social, cultural, environmental, and community-based knowledge. Indigenous knowledge systems refer to the knowledge, skills, beliefs, practices, and experiences developed and transmitted within indigenous communities over generations. Limited understanding of indigenous knowledge systems may contribute to the neglect of valuable local knowledge and weaken its recognition in contemporary learning and community life. The study therefore aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ understanding of indigenous knowledge systems. Adult education can expose learners to indigenous knowledge through discussions, storytelling, demonstrations, community-based learning, oral history, practical activities, and interaction with knowledgeable community members. These learning experiences can introduce adults to locally developed knowledge concerning agriculture, environmental management, traditional crafts, food preservation, community practices, and other areas of everyday life. By connecting formal and non-formal learning with existing community knowledge, adult education can help learners examine the origins, relevance, transmission, and application of indigenous knowledge systems. Understanding indigenous knowledge systems involves recognizing the sources, characteristics, methods of transmission, cultural significance, and practical applications of knowledge developed within indigenous communities. Adults with adequate understanding may be better able to identify indigenous knowledge as a valuable source of community experience and recognize how it contributes to problem-solving and everyday practices. Adult education can strengthen this understanding by providing structured opportunities for learners to examine indigenous knowledge critically, compare different sources of knowledge, and appreciate its relevance to contemporary community life. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure adults’ exposure to adult education and their understanding of indigenous knowledge systems. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Descriptive statistics will be used to answer the research questions, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be employed to test the hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of indigenous knowledge systems. Adults exposed to relevant educational experiences are expected to demonstrate greater knowledge of the sources, characteristics, transmission processes, cultural significance, and practical applications of indigenous knowledge. The study is also expected to show that adult education can help learners recognize the relationship between indigenous knowledge and contemporary community needs while developing a more informed appreciation of locally developed knowledge. The findings are expected to have implications for the teaching and learning of adult education by emphasizing the importance of integrating relevant indigenous knowledge into appropriate adult learning activities. Adult educators may use storytelling, demonstrations, community-based learning, discussions, interviews with knowledgeable community members, and practical activities to expose learners to indigenous knowledge systems. Such approaches can make adult education more culturally relevant and enable learners to connect educational content with knowledge and experiences within their communities. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, community knowledge holders, cultural organizations, and adult education programme planners. Adult learners may benefit from improved understanding of indigenous knowledge and its relevance to contemporary life. Adult educators may gain useful information for developing culturally responsive learning activities, while community knowledge holders and cultural organizations may benefit from increased recognition of locally developed knowledge. Programme planners may also use the findings to strengthen adult education programmes that appropriately incorporate community-based knowledge into learning. The study recommends that adult education programmes should provide appropriate opportunities for adults to learn about indigenous knowledge systems through culturally relevant and participatory learning methods. Adult educators should collaborate with knowledgeable community members when developing learning activities and should present indigenous knowledge accurately while encouraging critical examination of its applications and limitations. Learning activities should promote responsible documentation, understanding, and transmission of valuable local knowledge without treating all traditional practices as automatically appropriate. It is concluded that adult education can serve as an important avenue for improving adults’ understanding of indigenous knowledge systems and strengthening the connection between adult learning and community knowledge.
