Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Household Measurement Units
Abstract
Household measurement units are standard quantities used in everyday activities to measure items such as length, weight, volume, temperature, and time. Adults’ understanding of these units involves recognizing different measurements, knowing their meanings, and applying them appropriately in household activities. Limited understanding of measurement units may result in inaccurate measurements during cooking, shopping, medication-related activities, home maintenance, and other daily tasks. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ understanding of household measurement units. Adult education can provide adults with practical knowledge of commonly used measurement units through demonstrations, discussions, practical exercises, and real-life household examples. Learners can be taught how to recognize units such as grams, kilograms, millilitres, litres, centimetres, metres, and degrees Celsius, as well as understand their appropriate applications. Practical activities involving household containers, measuring tools, packages, and everyday objects can make measurement concepts easier to understand. Adults’ understanding of household measurement units involves identifying measurement units, distinguishing between different quantities, interpreting measurements presented on household products, and selecting appropriate units for specific tasks. Adult education can strengthen these abilities by providing learners with repeated opportunities to work with familiar measurement tools and practical examples. Improved understanding may enable adults to interpret measurements more accurately and apply them appropriately in everyday household activities. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise selected adult learners in the study area, from whom an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and practical assessment items designed to measure exposure to adult education and adults’ understanding of household measurement units. The instrument will be validated by experts, while its reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of household measurement units. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved ability to identify, interpret, compare, and apply common measurement units. The findings may also indicate that practical demonstrations and hands-on measurement activities are useful for strengthening adults’ understanding of measurement concepts. The study may have implications for the teaching and learning of functional numeracy in adult education programmes. Adult educators may need to use practical household materials and measuring instruments when teaching measurement concepts. Activities involving actual quantities, containers, scales, rulers, and temperature indicators may help learners connect numerical knowledge with familiar household tasks and improve their practical measurement skills. The findings may benefit adult learners, adult educators, households, community learning centres, consumer education providers, and organisations involved in adult literacy and numeracy programmes. Adults may become more confident in interpreting measurements encountered in everyday activities, while educators may gain useful approaches for teaching practical measurement skills. Households may also benefit from improved accuracy when adults apply measurement knowledge to routine activities. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate practical lessons on household measurement units using familiar objects and measurement instruments. Adult educators should employ demonstrations, guided exercises, comparisons, and repeated practice to strengthen learners’ understanding. Relevant organisations should support functional numeracy programmes that develop practical measurement skills among adults. The study concludes that adult education can contribute meaningfully to improving adults’ understanding of household measurement units when instruction is practical, accessible, and connected to everyday household experiences.
