Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Household Financial Priorities
Abstract
Household financial priorities refer to the order of importance individuals and families assign to different financial needs, obligations, and goals. Understanding these priorities is important because households often have limited financial resources and must decide which expenses should receive attention first. Inadequate understanding may result in poor allocation of available resources and difficulty meeting important household obligations. Therefore, this study examines the effect of adult education on adults’ understanding of household financial priorities. Adult education can provide adults with practical knowledge about household income, essential expenses, financial obligations, savings, emergency needs, and longer-term financial goals. Through discussions, illustrations, household financial scenarios, and practical planning activities, learners can develop an understanding of how different financial needs can be ranked according to their importance. Such educational activities can help adults recognize the relationship between available resources and competing household financial demands. Adults’ understanding of household financial priorities refers to their ability to identify, explain, and appropriately rank different household financial needs according to their importance and urgency. This understanding enables adults to recognize which financial obligations require greater attention when resources are limited. Adult education can strengthen this understanding by providing relevant financial knowledge and opportunities to examine realistic household financial situations. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will consist of adults participating in selected adult education programmes, while an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to adult education and adults’ understanding of household financial priorities. The data obtained will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of household financial priorities. It is expected that adults exposed to relevant educational instruction will demonstrate improved ability to identify important household financial needs, distinguish urgent from less urgent obligations, and explain how financial resources can be directed toward different priorities. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education programmes. Facilitators can incorporate household financial scenarios, priority-ranking exercises, income-allocation activities, and practical discussions into financial literacy lessons. These activities can make financial concepts more meaningful and help adults develop a clearer understanding of how household financial priorities can be established. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult education facilitators, households, community learning centres, financial literacy organizations, and policymakers. Adults may benefit from improved understanding of how to organize competing financial needs, while facilitators can use the findings to strengthen practical financial education. Financial literacy organizations may also benefit from evidence that can guide the development of household financial-priority learning activities. The study will recommend that household financial-priority education be incorporated into relevant adult education programmes. Facilitators should use practical household examples, priority-ranking exercises, and realistic financial situations to strengthen adults’ understanding of financial priorities. The study concludes that effective adult education can improve adults’ understanding of household financial priorities and support more informed management of limited household financial resources.
