Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Employee Grievance Procedures

Abstract

Employee grievance procedures are formal processes established within workplaces to enable employees to raise concerns, complaints, or disputes and seek appropriate resolution. Adults’ understanding of these procedures involves knowing the purpose, stages, requirements, reporting channels, and expected processes for handling workplace grievances. Limited understanding may prevent employees from recognizing appropriate procedures or following established channels when workplace concerns arise. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ understanding of employee grievance procedures. Adult education can provide adults with knowledge about workplace policies, grievance channels, complaint documentation, reporting processes, and the roles of relevant workplace authorities. Through discussions, case studies, role-play activities, guided interpretation of workplace policies, and practical scenarios, adult learners can become familiar with the stages involved in raising and addressing grievances. These educational approaches can make procedural information easier to understand and apply. Adults’ understanding of employee grievance procedures involves recognizing when a workplace concern may require a formal grievance, identifying the appropriate reporting channel, understanding documentation requirements, and knowing the general stages through which a grievance may be handled. Adult education can strengthen this understanding by exposing learners to realistic workplace situations and allowing them to examine appropriate procedural responses. Greater understanding may help adults approach workplace concerns more appropriately and confidently. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise selected adult learners in the study area, from whom an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and scenario-based assessment items designed to measure exposure to adult education and adults’ understanding of employee grievance procedures. The instrument will be validated by experts, while reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of employee grievance procedures. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of grievance channels, reporting stages, documentation requirements, and procedural expectations. The findings may also indicate that practical case studies and role-play activities are useful for strengthening adults’ understanding of workplace grievance processes. The study may have implications for the teaching and learning of workplace-related content within adult education programmes. Adult educators may need to use practical workplace scenarios rather than relying exclusively on theoretical explanations. Case studies, policy interpretation exercises, simulations, and guided discussions can help learners understand grievance procedures and connect procedural knowledge with realistic workplace situations. The findings may benefit adult learners, adult educators, employees, employers, workplace learning providers, and organisations involved in employee development. Adults may become more knowledgeable about established grievance processes, while educators may gain useful approaches for teaching workplace procedural knowledge. Employers and organisations may also benefit from employees having a clearer understanding of appropriate channels for raising workplace concerns. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate practical lessons on employee grievance procedures. Adult educators should use workplace case studies, role-play, policy interpretation, and scenario-based activities to improve learners’ understanding of grievance processes. Organisations should also make workplace grievance information clear and accessible to employees. The study concludes that adult education can contribute meaningfully to improving adults’ understanding of employee grievance procedures when instruction is practical, clear, and relevant to workplace experiences.
