Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Automation in Everyday Life

Abstract

Automation in everyday life refers to the use of technologies, machines, software, and automated systems to perform tasks or processes with limited direct human intervention. Adult Education provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge that can help them understand how automated technologies operate and how they influence everyday activities. As automation becomes increasingly common in homes, workplaces, transportation, banking, communication, shopping, and public services, adults need relevant knowledge to understand its applications, benefits, limitations, and implications. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of automation in everyday life. Adult Education can expose learners to different forms of automation and their practical applications in everyday environments. Through structured learning activities, adults can learn about automated payment systems, smart household devices, automated customer-service systems, recommendation systems, digital scheduling tools, self-service technologies, and other automated processes. Such education can help learners understand how automated systems perform tasks, process information, follow programmed instructions, and interact with users in different settings. Adults’ understanding of automation in everyday life involves their ability to explain what automation means, identify common automated systems, and recognize how automation influences routine activities. Adults with relevant knowledge may be better positioned to distinguish automated processes from activities that require direct human involvement. Improved understanding can also help adults appreciate the benefits and limitations of automation, recognize situations where human intervention remains necessary, and interact more confidently with automated technologies. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of automation in everyday life. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of automation in everyday life. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of automation in everyday life. It is anticipated that adults exposed to relevant educational activities will demonstrate improved knowledge of automated systems, their applications, operating processes, benefits, and limitations. The study may also reveal that practical exposure to everyday automation improves adults’ ability to recognize automated processes and understand the appropriate role of human involvement when using such technologies. The findings are expected to have important implications for Adult Education practitioners and programme developers. Incorporating practical automation concepts into adult learning programmes can provide opportunities for learners to examine familiar automated systems, identify how automation is used in everyday activities, and discuss situations requiring human involvement. Such activities may strengthen technological awareness and help adults adapt more confidently to environments where automated systems increasingly support routine tasks and services. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, households, employers, technology users, community organisations, and policymakers interested in digital and technological awareness. It is recommended that adult education programmes should incorporate practical learning activities covering everyday automation, automated services, smart technologies, self-service systems, human involvement, and the benefits and limitations of automation. The study concludes that effective Adult Education can improve adults’ understanding of automation in everyday life and support more informed and confident interaction with increasingly automated environments.
