Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Moral Reasoning in Everyday Situations

Abstract

Moral reasoning refers to the process through which individuals examine values, principles, responsibilities, and possible consequences when deciding how to respond to situations involving questions of right and wrong. The ability to reason morally is important in everyday life because adults frequently encounter situations that require them to consider fairness, honesty, responsibility, respect, and the possible effects of their actions on others. Adult Education can provide learning experiences that develop adults’ ability to examine such situations carefully and make reasoned moral judgments. This study therefore examines the effect of Adult Education on adults’ moral reasoning in everyday situations. Adult Education can expose learners to concepts related to values, moral principles, responsibility, fairness, respect, and social conduct. Through discussions, case studies, role-play, reflective activities, and problem-solving exercises, adults can examine situations involving competing values and consider different possible responses. These learning experiences can encourage learners to explain the reasons behind their judgments rather than simply stating whether an action is right or wrong. Regular engagement with practical situations may therefore strengthen adults’ capacity to consider different perspectives and apply relevant principles when making moral judgments. Moral reasoning in everyday situations involves identifying the moral dimensions of a situation, considering relevant values and responsibilities, examining possible actions, and providing reasons for a particular judgment. Adults may encounter such situations in family relationships, workplaces, community interactions, and other areas of daily life. Adult Education can strengthen moral reasoning by helping learners examine situations systematically, consider the consequences of alternative actions, and recognize the importance of fairness and responsibility. Improved moral reasoning may enable adults to make more thoughtful judgments rather than relying solely on immediate emotions, personal preferences, or social pressure. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adult learners participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ moral reasoning in everyday situations. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ moral reasoning. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ moral reasoning in everyday situations. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate stronger abilities to identify moral concerns, consider competing values, examine possible consequences, and provide reasonable justifications for their judgments. The expected findings may further indicate that practical discussions and analysis of everyday moral situations improve adults’ confidence in handling situations that require careful consideration of ethical and moral principles. The findings are expected to have implications for the content and delivery of Adult Education programmes. Adult Education practitioners may need to incorporate practical moral-reasoning activities into learning programmes rather than focusing exclusively on the memorization of moral principles. Case studies, role-play, guided discussions, reflective exercises, and analysis of everyday situations can give adults opportunities to consider different viewpoints and explain the reasoning behind their judgments. Such activities can make learning more relevant and encourage the development of thoughtful and responsible decision-making skills. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, programme planners, community organizations, families, employers, researchers, and other stakeholders interested in promoting responsible conduct and sound judgment. It may provide useful evidence on the contribution of Adult Education to the development of adults’ moral reasoning abilities. The study recommends greater integration of practical moral-reasoning and values-based activities into Adult Education programmes, particularly activities based on realistic everyday situations. It concludes that strengthening adults’ moral reasoning can contribute to more thoughtful judgments, responsible choices, and constructive relationships in everyday life.
