Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Workplace Rights
Abstract
Adult education refers to organized learning opportunities through which adults acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies, while workplace rights refer to the lawful and recognized entitlements of employees within an employment relationship. Knowledge of workplace rights is important because it enables adults to understand the conditions under which they work, recognize fair treatment, and identify the responsibilities of employers and employees. However, inadequate knowledge of workplace rights may limit adults’ ability to understand and respond appropriately to workplace situations. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of workplace rights. Adult education provides adults with opportunities to acquire knowledge through formal, non-formal, and informal learning experiences. These may include literacy programmes, workshops, lectures, discussions, training sessions, and community-based educational activities. Through relevant adult education, learners can acquire knowledge about employment conditions, workplace regulations, employee entitlements, grievance procedures, and acceptable workplace practices. Such learning opportunities can improve adults’ ability to understand information relating to their employment relationships and recognize the rights associated with working environments. Adults’ knowledge of workplace rights refers to their ability to identify, explain, and understand the rights and entitlements available to them as employees. These may include knowledge relating to fair treatment, remuneration, working conditions, leave entitlements, workplace safety, freedom from unlawful discrimination, and appropriate procedures for addressing workplace grievances. Adult education may influence this knowledge by providing adults with accessible information, practical examples, discussions, and learning activities that make workplace rights easier to understand and apply. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults within the selected study area who are engaged in employment or have relevant workplace experience, from which a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on adults’ exposure to adult education and their knowledge of workplace rights. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of workplace rights. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a significant effect on adults’ knowledge of workplace rights. Adults with greater exposure to relevant educational programmes are expected to demonstrate better understanding of their workplace entitlements, employment conditions, safety rights, and procedures for addressing workplace concerns. The findings may also indicate that adult education improves adults’ ability to recognize information relating to workplace rights and understand the obligations associated with employment relationships. The findings will have implications for adult education practice by emphasizing the importance of incorporating workplace rights education into appropriate adult learning programmes. Adult educators can use practical examples, workplace scenarios, discussions, case studies, and simplified learning materials to improve adults’ understanding of employment rights. Such educational approaches can make workplace information more accessible and enable learners to relate acquired knowledge to real employment situations. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, employees, adult educators, employers, labour organizations, workplace trainers, and policymakers. Adults may benefit from improved knowledge of their workplace rights and greater ability to understand employment-related information. Adult educators may gain useful information for developing relevant workplace education programmes, while employers and labour organizations may use the findings to support employee education and promote better awareness of workplace rights and obligations. The study will recommend that adult education programmes should include appropriate learning content on workplace rights, employment conditions, workplace safety, employee entitlements, and grievance procedures. Adult educators should employ practical and accessible teaching methods that enable adults to understand and apply workplace rights information. Employers, labour organizations, and adult education providers should also collaborate in providing educational programmes that strengthen workers’ knowledge of workplace rights. The study concludes that effective adult education can improve adults’ knowledge of workplace rights and support more informed understanding of employment relationships.
