Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Wall Painting Techniques

Abstract

Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire useful knowledge and practical skills that can improve their participation in vocational and household activities. Wall painting involves a range of techniques, including surface preparation, selection and handling of painting materials, colour application, brush and roller use, and proper finishing. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of appropriate wall painting techniques because of inadequate access to structured practical learning opportunities. This study therefore examines the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of wall painting techniques. Adult education programmes can expose learners to practical and experience-based activities through demonstrations, explanations, guided practice, discussions, and the use of relevant instructional materials. In wall painting, learners can acquire knowledge about preparing surfaces, identifying suitable painting tools and materials, mixing and applying paint, using brushes and rollers appropriately, applying coats evenly, and maintaining clean working procedures. These learning activities can provide adults with opportunities to connect theoretical explanations with practical experiences and improve their understanding of appropriate painting procedures. Adults’ knowledge of wall painting techniques refers to their understanding of the procedures, tools, materials, and practices required to achieve satisfactory wall painting results. Adequate knowledge is important because improper surface preparation, incorrect paint application, unsuitable tools, uneven coating, and poor finishing can negatively affect the appearance and durability of painted surfaces. Adult education may therefore improve adults’ knowledge by providing structured instruction, practical demonstrations, and opportunities to observe and practise correct wall painting techniques. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education or vocational programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of wall painting techniques. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of wall painting techniques. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of wall painting techniques. Adults exposed to structured learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of wall preparation, painting materials, tool selection, paint application, coating procedures, colour handling, and finishing practices. The findings may further indicate that practical demonstrations and supervised activities enhance adults’ ability to understand and retain knowledge relating to wall painting. The study will conclude that adult education can provide an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of practical wall painting techniques. It will recommend that adult education and vocational programmes provide adequate practical demonstrations, appropriate painting materials and tools, supervised learning activities, and relevant safety guidance. Strengthening these learning opportunities can improve adults’ practical knowledge and support their ability to apply appropriate wall painting techniques in household, vocational, and community settings.
