Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Universal Design Principles
Abstract
Adult Education provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge and skills that can support inclusive participation in educational, workplace, community, and public environments. Universal Design principles refer to approaches for designing products, environments, services, and information so that they can be used by as many people as possible without the need for unnecessary adaptation or specialized arrangements. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of Universal Design principles. The study will focus on how educational experiences can improve adults’ understanding of inclusive design and its relevance to accessibility and participation. Adult Education can introduce learners to the major ideas underlying Universal Design, including flexibility, simplicity, accessibility, usability, and consideration of diverse human needs during the design process. Through discussions, demonstrations, practical examples, and participatory learning activities, adults can become familiar with how Universal Design principles can be applied to physical environments, products, services, communication materials, and digital platforms. Such learning experiences may also help adults understand the importance of considering accessibility from the beginning rather than addressing barriers only after they have been created. Adults’ knowledge of Universal Design principles involves their understanding of the basic concepts and approaches used to create environments, products, services, and information that can accommodate diverse users. This includes awareness of principles such as equitable use, flexibility in use, simple and intuitive use, perceptible information, tolerance for error, low physical effort, and appropriate space for use. Adult Education may strengthen this knowledge by providing accessible explanations and practical opportunities for learners to identify how these principles can reduce barriers and support wider participation. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of Universal Design principles. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of Universal Design principles. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of Universal Design principles. Adults who participate in relevant educational activities may demonstrate improved understanding of inclusive design concepts and greater awareness of how design choices can affect accessibility and participation. The study may further establish that practical examples and demonstrations can help adults recognize Universal Design principles in everyday environments, products, services, and information resources. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community learning facilitators, designers, service providers, and organisations concerned with accessibility and inclusion. Incorporating Universal Design concepts into Adult Education programmes may help learners develop knowledge that can be applied when assessing or developing community facilities, learning materials, public services, and digital information. Practical activities involving examples of accessible and inaccessible designs may also help adults connect theoretical principles with everyday situations. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, community organisations, designers, service providers, and other stakeholders interested in promoting accessibility and inclusive participation. It is recommended that Adult Education programmes should incorporate practical learning activities that introduce adults to Universal Design principles and their application in different settings. The study concludes that Adult Education can serve as an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of Universal Design and strengthening awareness of design approaches that support accessibility and participation for diverse users.
