Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Tie-Dye Production

Abstract

Tie-dye production is a practical textile activity that involves the use of fabric, dyes, tying or folding techniques, and appropriate finishing procedures to create distinctive patterns and designs. Knowledge of tie-dye production enables adults to understand the materials, tools, preparation methods, dyeing processes, and finishing techniques required to produce quality dyed fabrics. However, inadequate knowledge of tie-dye procedures may result in poor colour development, uneven patterns, material wastage, and unsatisfactory finished products. Adult Education provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical and income-generating skills through structured and experience-based learning. This study therefore examines the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of tie-dye production. Adult Education in this context involves structured learning activities through which adults are introduced to the basic principles and processes of tie-dye production. Such activities may include demonstrations, discussions, material identification, fabric preparation, tying and folding exercises, dye preparation, colour application, rinsing, drying, and finishing activities. Learners may also be exposed to different pattern-making techniques and methods of achieving desirable colour effects. Practical learning enables adults to observe the correct sequence of production activities and develop familiarity with the materials and procedures involved in tie-dye production. Knowledge of tie-dye production refers to adults’ understanding of the materials, tools, fabric preparation, tying methods, dye preparation, colour application, pattern formation, and finishing procedures associated with tie-dye production. Adults with adequate knowledge are better able to select appropriate materials, prepare fabrics correctly, apply suitable tying techniques, and follow the required production processes. Adult Education can improve this knowledge by combining theoretical explanations with demonstrations and hands-on practice. Such learning experiences may strengthen adults’ confidence and ability to apply tie-dye production knowledge to practical and livelihood-related activities. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education, vocational, or community-based learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of tie-dye production. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of tie-dye production. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of tie-dye production. Adults exposed to relevant learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of fabric preparation, tying and folding methods, dye preparation, colour application, pattern formation, and finishing procedures. The study may further indicate that practical demonstrations and supervised production activities contribute substantially to improved knowledge because learners can observe and practise the various stages of tie-dye production. The findings are expected to have implications for adult educators, vocational instructors, textile trainers, community learning facilitators, and skills-development organisations. Adult Education programmes should provide appropriate fabrics, dyes, tools, instructional materials, and opportunities for supervised practical activities. Practical exposure can help learners connect theoretical knowledge with actual production processes while developing confidence in creating tie-dye products. Acquired knowledge may also support self-employment, creative expression, household textile activities, and participation in small-scale textile enterprises. The study will conclude that Adult Education can serve as an effective means of improving adults’ knowledge of tie-dye production. It will recommend that relevant programmes incorporate practical demonstrations, material-identification activities, fabric preparation exercises, tying and dyeing practice, and appropriate finishing activities. Adult educators should provide repeated opportunities for learners to practise different tie-dye techniques and understand the proper handling of dyes and materials. The study will contribute to the development of practical Adult Education programmes that equip adults with useful textile production knowledge for personal, vocational, and livelihood applications.
