Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Textile Printing Techniques

Abstract

Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can support vocational development, self-reliance, and participation in income-generating activities. Textile printing involves the application of colours, patterns, and designs onto fabrics using appropriate materials, tools, and techniques. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of textile printing procedures due to inadequate access to structured practical learning opportunities. This study therefore examines the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of textile printing techniques. Adult education programmes can provide practical and experience-based learning through demonstrations, discussions, guided practice, illustrations, and supervised activities. In textile printing, adults can learn about fabric preparation, selection of suitable printing materials, preparation and application of printing colours, use of printing tools, pattern arrangement, colour combinations, and proper finishing procedures. These learning activities can help learners connect theoretical explanations with practical experiences and develop a clearer understanding of the processes involved in textile printing. Adults’ knowledge of textile printing techniques refers to their understanding of the materials, tools, procedures, design processes, colour application methods, and finishing practices required for effective textile printing. Adequate knowledge is important because improper fabric preparation, inappropriate colour application, poor pattern placement, and unsuitable finishing procedures can affect the quality and appearance of printed fabrics. Adult education may therefore improve adults’ knowledge by providing structured instruction, practical demonstrations, and opportunities to observe and practise appropriate textile printing techniques. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education or vocational programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of textile printing techniques. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of textile printing techniques. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of textile printing techniques. Adults exposed to structured learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of fabric preparation, printing materials, colour preparation, printing tools, pattern arrangement, colour application, and finishing procedures. The findings may further indicate that practical demonstrations and supervised activities enhance adults’ ability to understand and retain knowledge relating to textile printing. The study will conclude that adult education can provide an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of textile printing techniques. It will recommend that adult education and vocational programmes provide appropriate printing materials and tools, practical demonstrations, supervised hands-on activities, and adequate opportunities for learners to practise different textile printing procedures. Strengthening these learning opportunities can enhance adults’ practical knowledge, support vocational skill development, and improve their ability to apply textile printing techniques effectively for personal and income-generating purposes.
