Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Signage Design

Abstract

Signage design refers to the planning and creation of signs using words, symbols, colours, shapes, images, typography, and visual arrangements to communicate information, directions, warnings, or instructions to people. Adults encounter different forms of signage in public spaces, workplaces, transportation facilities, commercial environments, and community settings. Adult education can provide learners with knowledge that enables them to understand the principles and purposes of effective signage. This study will examine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of signage design, focusing on the extent to which educational experiences can improve adults’ understanding of how signs are created and used for effective communication. Adult education provides adults with opportunities to acquire knowledge and practical skills that are relevant to their everyday lives and social environments. Through discussions, demonstrations, visual examples, practical activities, and guided learning, adults can develop an understanding of important elements of signage design. These may include typography, colour selection, symbols, layout, visibility, readability, contrast, size, positioning, and consistency. Exposure to these concepts can help adults recognize how different design features contribute to the effectiveness of signs and how inappropriate design choices may make information difficult to understand. Adults’ knowledge of signage design refers to their understanding of the principles, elements, functions, and applications involved in developing effective signs. Such knowledge enables adults to identify appropriate visual features and understand how signage can communicate information clearly to different audiences. Adult education can strengthen this knowledge by exposing learners to examples of effective and ineffective signs and encouraging them to compare their visual characteristics. Through practical learning experiences, adults may also become more capable of identifying signs that provide clear information, appropriate directions, warnings, or instructions within different environments. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure participants’ knowledge of signage design principles and applications. The research instrument will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while its reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of signage design. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult education contributes positively to adults’ knowledge of important signage design principles. It is expected that learners exposed to relevant educational activities will demonstrate improved understanding of typography, colour combinations, symbols, layout, visibility, readability, and the appropriate use of visual elements in signage. The study may also establish that practical examples and visual demonstrations enhance adults’ ability to recognize effective signage and understand how design choices influence the communication of information. The study will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, facilitators, community educators, and programme developers. It will emphasize the value of incorporating visual communication activities into relevant adult learning programmes to improve learners’ understanding of information presented through signs. Facilitators may use real-life signage examples, comparative exercises, demonstrations, and practical design activities to strengthen learners’ knowledge. Such approaches can make learning more practical and enable adults to apply their understanding of signage design to community, workplace, commercial, and public environments. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, community organizations, vocational programmes, public-space managers, and researchers interested in visual communication and functional learning. It will recommend the inclusion of relevant signage design concepts and practical visual activities in adult education programmes where appropriate. The study will conclude that adult education can play an important role in improving adults’ knowledge of signage design and strengthening their ability to understand the visual principles used to communicate information effectively.
