Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Public Park Regulations
Abstract
Public park regulations are rules and guidelines established to promote the safe, orderly, responsible, and appropriate use of public parks and recreational spaces. Adult Education can provide adults with relevant knowledge about these regulations and help them understand the responsibilities associated with using shared public spaces. This study will examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of public park regulations. The study is important because inadequate knowledge of park regulations may contribute to inappropriate use of facilities, environmental damage, safety concerns, and conflicts among park users. Adult Education can expose adults to common public park regulations relating to waste disposal, protection of plants and facilities, noise control, appropriate use of recreational equipment, restricted activities, opening and closing arrangements, personal safety, and responsible conduct. Through discussions, illustrations, practical activities, community-based learning, and examination of real-life situations, adults can develop better knowledge of the rules governing public parks. Such learning can also help adults understand the reasons behind regulations and the importance of complying with them. Adults’ knowledge of public park regulations involves their ability to identify relevant rules, understand their purposes, recognize permitted and prohibited activities, and apply appropriate conduct when using public parks. Adequate knowledge can encourage responsible use of shared recreational spaces and help adults contribute to the cleanliness, safety, and preservation of park facilities. Adult Education can strengthen this knowledge by connecting educational activities with everyday experiences in public recreational environments. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of public park regulations. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of public park regulations. The study is expected to establish that participation in Adult Education contributes positively to adults’ knowledge of public park regulations. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of rules relating to waste disposal, facility use, environmental protection, noise control, restricted activities, and personal safety. The study may further establish that practical and community-based learning activities are useful for helping adults understand park regulations and recognize the importance of responsible use of public recreational spaces. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community educators, park managers, environmental organizations, and programme planners. Adult Education programmes can incorporate practical activities that expose adults to common public park regulations and allow them to discuss realistic situations involving responsible and inappropriate park use. Visual materials, role-play, community discussions, and practical observation activities can make learning more meaningful and encourage adults to apply park regulations appropriately. The study will be significant to adult learners, community members, Adult Education practitioners, park management authorities, environmental organizations, and community development stakeholders by providing information on the role of education in improving knowledge of public park regulations. It will recommend greater inclusion of practical public-space management content in relevant Adult Education programmes and the use of learner-centred activities that connect regulations with everyday community experiences. The study will conclude that Adult Education can provide an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of public park regulations and promoting responsible, safe, and sustainable use of public recreational spaces.
