Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Mobile Device Maintenance

Abstract

Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire relevant knowledge and practical skills that can support technological competence, self-reliance, and participation in income-generating activities. Mobile devices have become important tools for communication, learning, financial transactions, information access, and business activities, making basic maintenance knowledge increasingly useful. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of appropriate procedures for maintaining mobile devices and addressing common maintenance needs. This study therefore examines the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of mobile device maintenance. Adult education can provide learners with practical and experience-based learning through demonstrations, discussions, guided practice, illustrations, and supervised activities. In mobile device maintenance, adults can acquire knowledge of proper device handling, cleaning procedures, battery care, charging practices, software maintenance, storage management, and basic troubleshooting. Such learning experiences can help adults understand appropriate maintenance procedures and develop greater confidence in caring for their mobile devices. Adults’ knowledge of mobile device maintenance refers to their understanding of the procedures and practices required to keep mobile devices in good working condition and reduce avoidable problems. Adequate knowledge is important because inappropriate charging, poor cleaning practices, insufficient storage management, careless handling, and failure to identify basic device problems can affect device performance and usability. Adult education may therefore improve adults’ knowledge by providing structured explanations, demonstrations, and opportunities to practise appropriate mobile device maintenance procedures. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education or vocational programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of mobile device maintenance. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of mobile device maintenance. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of mobile device maintenance. Adults exposed to structured learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of proper device handling, cleaning, battery care, charging practices, software maintenance, storage management, and basic troubleshooting. The findings may further indicate that practical demonstrations and guided activities enhance adults’ ability to understand and retain knowledge relating to routine mobile device maintenance. The study will conclude that adult education can serve as an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of mobile device maintenance. It will recommend that adult education programmes incorporate practical digital skills activities, demonstrations, relevant instructional materials, and supervised practice into programmes involving mobile technology. Strengthening these learning opportunities can improve adults’ technological knowledge, promote responsible device use, reduce avoidable maintenance problems, and support more effective participation in digitally connected personal and economic activities.
