Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Interior Decoration Techniques

Abstract

Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can improve their personal development, creativity, vocational competence, and ability to manage their living environments. Interior decoration involves the application of materials, colours, furniture, accessories, lighting, and other elements to improve the appearance, comfort, and functionality of interior spaces. However, limited knowledge of appropriate decoration techniques may affect adults’ ability to create well-organized and attractive interior environments. This study will examine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of interior decoration techniques. Adult education activities in interior decoration may expose adults to different techniques such as colour selection, furniture arrangement, space utilization, selection of decorative materials, wall treatment, window treatment, accessory placement, and basic lighting arrangement. Learning activities may include demonstrations, discussions, visual illustrations, practical exercises, and guided decoration projects. These activities can help adults understand how different decorative elements are selected, combined, and arranged according to the purpose and characteristics of an interior space. Adults’ knowledge of interior decoration techniques refers to their understanding of the materials, principles, procedures, and practices involved in improving interior spaces. This may include knowledge of colour coordination, furniture placement, space planning, decorative material selection, accessory arrangement, wall decoration, window treatment, and basic lighting considerations. Adult education can strengthen this knowledge by connecting relevant explanations with practical activities that allow adults to observe, identify, and apply appropriate decoration techniques. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education, vocational, or skills-development programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an interior decoration techniques knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of relevant principles, materials, and procedures. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of interior decoration techniques. The study is expected to establish that adult education can improve adults’ knowledge of interior decoration techniques. Adults exposed to structured learning are expected to demonstrate better knowledge of colour coordination, furniture arrangement, space utilization, decorative material selection, accessory placement, wall treatment, window treatment, and basic lighting arrangement. The findings may also indicate that practical demonstrations and guided decoration activities enhance adults’ ability to understand and apply appropriate interior decoration techniques. The study will conclude that adult education can provide an effective means of improving adults’ knowledge of interior decoration techniques. It will recommend that adult education programmes incorporate practical demonstrations, relevant decorative materials, visual learning resources, guided projects, and opportunities for repeated practice. Improved knowledge of interior decoration techniques may contribute to greater creativity, better household management, improved interior functionality and appearance, vocational competence, self-reliance, and small-scale income-generating opportunities
