Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Household Budget Planning

Abstract

Household budget planning involves the process of identifying household income, estimating expenses, allocating available resources, and establishing spending priorities over a specific period. Adult Education can provide adults with practical knowledge and skills for making informed decisions about household financial resources. This study will examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of household budget planning, focusing on income identification, expense estimation, prioritisation of household needs, allocation of resources, and monitoring of planned expenditure. The study is motivated by the importance of strengthening adults’ understanding of household budgeting and promoting more informed financial planning practices. Adult Education provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical financial knowledge through discussions, demonstrations, problem-solving activities, group learning, and real-life examples. In relation to household budget planning, educational activities can introduce adults to the basic steps involved in preparing and reviewing a household budget. Adults can learn how to identify regular sources of income, classify household expenses, distinguish priorities, and allocate resources according to available income. Practical learning can make budgeting concepts easier to understand by connecting them with everyday household financial situations. Adults’ knowledge of household budget planning refers to their understanding of the principles and procedures involved in preparing, implementing, and reviewing a household budget. Adequate knowledge can help adults recognise the relationship between income and expenditure and make more informed decisions about household spending priorities. Adult Education can strengthen this knowledge by providing clear explanations, practical exercises, and opportunities to work through realistic household budgeting situations. Improved knowledge may therefore support adults in developing more organised approaches to managing available household resources. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of household budget planning. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of household budget planning. The study is expected to establish that participation in Adult Education programmes has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of household budget planning. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of income assessment, expense planning, spending priorities, resource allocation, and budget monitoring. The study may further establish that practical exercises and real-life financial examples are useful for helping adults understand household budgeting principles and relate them to their everyday financial responsibilities. The study is expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community educators, financial educators, and organisations involved in adult and community development programmes. Adult Education programmes may incorporate practical budgeting exercises, household financial scenarios, worksheets, and participatory discussions to strengthen adults’ budgeting knowledge. Such approaches can make financial learning more relevant and encourage adults to apply budgeting principles when planning household resources. The study will be significant to adults, households, Adult Education practitioners, community organisations, financial educators, and other stakeholders interested in improving household financial planning. It is expected to recommend the integration of practical household budget-planning activities into relevant Adult Education programmes and the use of simple, accessible learning materials. The study will conclude that appropriate Adult Education can improve adults’ knowledge of household budget planning and contribute to more informed and organised household financial decision-making.
