Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Electricity Generation Sources
Abstract
Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge that can improve their understanding of important issues affecting everyday life and community development. One important area is knowledge of electricity generation sources, which involves understanding the different methods through which electrical energy is produced, including thermal, hydroelectric, solar, wind, and other renewable and non-renewable sources. Limited knowledge of electricity generation sources may make it difficult for adults to understand energy choices, environmental implications, and the factors that influence electricity supply. This study therefore examines the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of electricity generation sources, with the aim of determining whether participation in adult education can improve their understanding of different electricity generation methods. Adult education can expose adults to electricity generation sources through group discussions, practical demonstrations, educational videos, community learning activities, workshops, diagrams, and locally relevant examples. These approaches can help learners understand how different generation sources operate and distinguish between renewable and non-renewable energy resources. Through practical and participatory learning activities, adults can examine the characteristics, advantages, limitations, and applications of different electricity generation sources and relate energy concepts to situations within their communities. Knowledge of electricity generation sources involves the ability to identify different sources of electricity, explain their basic methods of generation, distinguish renewable from non-renewable sources, and recognize factors that influence their use. Adults with adequate knowledge may be better positioned to understand energy-related discussions, appreciate alternative sources of electricity, and recognize the environmental and practical considerations associated with different generation methods. Adult education can strengthen this knowledge by providing opportunities for adults to compare energy sources, examine practical examples, and discuss their relevance to household and community energy needs. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of electricity generation sources. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of electricity generation sources. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult education contributes positively to adults’ knowledge of electricity generation sources. It is expected that adults exposed to structured learning activities will demonstrate improved ability to identify major electricity generation sources, explain their basic characteristics, distinguish renewable from non-renewable sources, and recognize their respective advantages and limitations. The findings may also indicate that practical and visual learning approaches are useful for helping adults understand electricity generation concepts that may otherwise appear technical or difficult to relate to everyday experiences. The findings may have important implications for Adult Education practitioners, community educators, environmental educators, and organizations involved in energy-awareness programmes. Adult education programmes can incorporate practical discussions, diagrams, demonstrations, educational videos, and community-based activities that explain different electricity generation sources. Such activities may improve adults’ energy knowledge and encourage more informed participation in discussions concerning electricity supply, renewable energy, and sustainable energy practices. The study will be significant to adults, Adult Education practitioners, community educators, environmental organizations, researchers, and policymakers interested in strengthening public understanding of energy resources. It is recommended that Adult Education programmes incorporate relevant learning activities on electricity generation sources, renewable energy technologies, energy sustainability, and basic energy systems. The study concludes that appropriately designed adult education can provide an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of electricity generation sources and strengthening informed understanding of energy-related issues.
