Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Cooperative Financial Meetings
Abstract
Cooperative financial meetings are organized gatherings where members discuss financial matters, review contributions, consider savings and lending activities, examine financial reports, and make collective decisions concerning cooperative resources. Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire relevant knowledge and develop practical understanding that can improve their participation in cooperative activities. Since effective participation in financial meetings requires members to understand meeting procedures, financial information, accountability, and collective decision-making, adequate knowledge of cooperative financial meetings is important. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of cooperative financial meetings. Adult education can expose learners to cooperative financial meeting concepts through group discussions, demonstrations, case studies, simulations, practical exercises, and interactive learning activities. These approaches can help adults understand meeting agendas, financial reports, member contributions, savings, loan discussions, budgeting issues, and procedures for making financial decisions. Practical learning can also allow participants to examine realistic cooperative situations and practise interpreting information presented during financial meetings. Through these activities, adults may develop greater awareness of their responsibilities and the procedures involved in participating effectively in cooperative financial discussions. Adults’ knowledge of cooperative financial meetings refers to their ability to identify, explain, and understand the procedures, activities, and financial matters commonly discussed during cooperative meetings. This includes knowledge of meeting agendas, financial reports, member contributions, savings, loans, accountability procedures, financial decisions, and collective decision-making. Adequate knowledge can enable members to follow financial discussions, understand information presented, ask relevant questions, and participate responsibly in decisions affecting the cooperative. Adult education is expected to improve this knowledge by providing relevant concepts and practical learning experiences related to cooperative financial activities. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected cooperative societies and Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of cooperative financial meetings. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of cooperative financial meetings. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of cooperative financial meetings. It is anticipated that adults exposed to relevant educational activities will demonstrate improved understanding of meeting procedures, financial discussions, member contributions, savings and loan matters, financial reporting, accountability, and collective decision-making. The findings may further indicate that practical and participatory learning methods help adults interpret financial information and understand their roles during cooperative meetings. Such outcomes would demonstrate the value of adult education in developing knowledge necessary for meaningful participation in cooperative financial activities. The study may have useful implications for adult educators, cooperative leaders, facilitators, financial education practitioners, and community development organizations. Adult Education programmes can incorporate cooperative financial meeting concepts into relevant learning activities and employ practical methods such as simulations, case studies, demonstrations, and group discussions. Facilitators can expose learners to realistic examples of financial discussions and decision-making situations encountered in cooperative societies. Strengthening adults’ knowledge in this area may improve their ability to participate responsibly in financial discussions and contribute to transparent and accountable cooperative activities. The study is significant because improved knowledge of cooperative financial meetings can support informed participation, financial accountability, responsible decision-making, and effective cooperative management. It is recommended that Adult Education programmes provide learning opportunities that expose cooperative members to relevant meeting procedures, financial concepts, reporting practices, and decision-making processes. Adult educators and cooperative facilitators should also use practical learning activities that enable participants to interpret financial information and engage confidently in cooperative discussions. The study concludes that adult education can provide an important foundation for improving adults’ knowledge of cooperative financial meetings and strengthening effective participation in cooperative activities.
