Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Community Tourism Attractions
Abstract
Community tourism attractions are natural, cultural, historical, recreational, and locally developed features that can attract visitors and contribute to the social and economic development of communities. Adult Education can provide adults with relevant knowledge about tourism resources within their communities and encourage greater awareness of their value and potential uses. This study will examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of community tourism attractions. The study is important because inadequate knowledge of local tourism resources may limit community participation in tourism development, preservation activities, and opportunities associated with local attractions. Adult Education can expose adults to different categories of community tourism attractions, including cultural sites, historical landmarks, traditional festivals, natural landscapes, recreational centres, craft locations, museums, and other places of local interest. Through discussions, community-based learning, field activities, visual materials, storytelling, and practical observation, adults can develop knowledge of the location, characteristics, significance, and potential value of these attractions. Such learning can also encourage adults to recognize tourism resources that may otherwise receive limited attention. Adults’ knowledge of community tourism attractions involves their ability to identify, describe, locate, and understand the significance of tourism resources within their communities. Adequate knowledge can enable adults to recognize the cultural, historical, environmental, and recreational value of local attractions and understand how they may contribute to community development. Adult Education can therefore strengthen this knowledge by connecting learning activities with local experiences and encouraging adults to explore and document tourism resources within their communities. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of community tourism attractions. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of community tourism attractions. The study is expected to establish that participation in Adult Education contributes positively to adults’ knowledge of community tourism attractions. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved ability to identify and describe local cultural, historical, natural, and recreational attractions. The study may further establish that community-based learning activities, field observations, and locally relevant educational materials are useful for strengthening adults’ awareness and understanding of tourism resources within their communities. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community educators, tourism development organizations, and programme planners. Adult Education programmes can incorporate practical community tourism activities that encourage adults to explore local attractions, document their significance, and discuss their potential contribution to community development. Field visits, community mapping, storytelling, visual presentations, and group discussions can make tourism-related learning more practical and relevant to adults’ experiences. The study will be significant to adult learners, community members, Adult Education practitioners, tourism stakeholders, cultural organizations, and community development planners by providing information on the role of education in improving knowledge of local tourism resources. It will recommend greater inclusion of community-based tourism content in relevant Adult Education programmes and the use of practical learning activities that promote awareness and appreciation of local attractions. The study will conclude that Adult Education can provide an effective avenue for strengthening adults’ knowledge of community tourism attractions and supporting greater community awareness and participation in tourism development.
