Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Community Broadcasting

Abstract

The study will examine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of community broadcasting. Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire relevant knowledge and practical competencies that enable them to participate effectively in community development and information-sharing activities. Community broadcasting serves as an important means of communicating information that reflects local interests, concerns, events, services, and development activities. However, limited knowledge of community broadcasting may restrict adults’ understanding of its purposes, functions, content development processes, and potential contributions to community communication. The study will therefore investigate the extent to which adult education can improve adults’ knowledge of community broadcasting. Adult education involves organized learning experiences designed to respond to the educational needs, interests, experiences, and practical circumstances of adults. Through appropriate learning activities, adults can acquire knowledge about different forms of community broadcasting, including local radio and other community-oriented broadcast platforms. Learning activities may expose participants to the purposes of community broadcasting, programme planning, audience participation, information dissemination, community representation, and responsible communication practices. Such learning can enable adults to understand how broadcasting can be used to address community information needs and support meaningful public participation. Knowledge of community broadcasting involves understanding its characteristics, objectives, functions, content, audience, and role in communicating information relevant to local communities. Adults with adequate knowledge may be better able to identify appropriate community broadcasting platforms, understand the types of information suitable for local audiences, and recognize opportunities for community participation in broadcasting activities. Adult education can strengthen this knowledge by providing relevant explanations, discussions, practical examples, and participatory learning experiences that connect broadcasting concepts with adults’ everyday community experiences. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure participants’ knowledge of community broadcasting. The research instrument will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while its reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of community broadcasting. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of community broadcasting. It is anticipated that adults who participate in relevant educational activities will demonstrate improved understanding of the purposes, characteristics, functions, content, and community participation opportunities associated with broadcasting. The study may also establish that practical discussions and community-based learning activities enhance adults’ ability to relate broadcasting concepts to local information and communication needs. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community educators, and broadcasting-related organizations. Adult Education programmes may incorporate community broadcasting concepts into learning activities to help adults understand how local media can support information sharing, community awareness, and participation. Facilitators can use discussions, practical demonstrations, programme analysis, and participatory activities to improve learners’ understanding of community broadcasting. Such approaches can make adult education more responsive to contemporary community communication needs. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, community organizations, broadcasters, and other stakeholders interested in effective community communication. It is recommended that Adult Education programmes provide relevant learning opportunities that improve adults’ understanding of community broadcasting and its potential uses. The study will conclude that strengthening adults’ knowledge of community broadcasting through appropriate educational experiences can improve their capacity to understand, engage with, and contribute to community-based communication activities.
