Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of ATM Safety Procedures
Abstract
ATM safety procedures refer to the practices and precautions users should follow when accessing automated teller machines to protect their personal information, banking details, and transactions. Adult Education can provide adults with the knowledge required to recognize and apply appropriate safety practices when using ATMs. This study will examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of ATM safety procedures, focusing on personal identification number protection, transaction privacy, card security, awareness of suspicious activities, and safe completion of ATM transactions. The study is motivated by the need to strengthen adults’ understanding of ATM safety and promote responsible practices when using automated banking facilities. Adult Education provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge through demonstrations, discussions, simulations, visual materials, and guided learning activities. In relation to ATM safety, educational activities can introduce adults to appropriate practices before, during, and after ATM transactions. Adults can learn how to protect their PIN, maintain privacy while entering transaction information, safeguard their bank cards, and respond appropriately to suspicious situations around ATM facilities. Practical learning can make safety information easier to understand and help adults apply it during real-life banking activities. Adults’ knowledge of ATM safety procedures refers to their understanding of the precautions and practices required to use ATMs securely. Adequate knowledge can help adults identify appropriate safety behaviours, protect sensitive banking information, and recognize situations that may require caution or assistance. Adult Education can strengthen this knowledge through realistic examples, demonstrations, and simulated ATM-use activities. Improved knowledge may therefore enable adults to make safer decisions and reduce avoidable risks associated with the use of automated banking facilities. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of ATM safety procedures. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of ATM safety procedures. The study is expected to establish that participation in Adult Education programmes has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of ATM safety procedures. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of PIN protection, transaction privacy, card security, awareness of suspicious activities, and appropriate responses to unusual situations. The study may further establish that practical demonstrations, simulations, and scenario-based learning are effective approaches for helping adults understand and retain ATM safety procedures. The study is expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners, financial literacy educators, community educators, banking institutions, and organisations involved in financial inclusion programmes. Adult Education activities may incorporate practical ATM safety demonstrations, simulated transaction exercises, visual learning materials, and discussions of common safety situations. These approaches can make safety education more practical and relevant while helping adults develop greater confidence in protecting their banking information during ATM transactions. The study will be significant to adults, banking customers, households, Adult Education practitioners, financial educators, banking institutions, and other stakeholders concerned with safe access to banking services. It is expected to recommend the integration of practical ATM safety education into relevant Adult Education and financial literacy programmes, with emphasis on hands-on learning and responsible banking practices. The study will conclude that appropriate Adult Education can improve adults’ knowledge of ATM safety procedures and contribute to safer and more informed use of automated banking facilities.
