Abstract
Astronomy is the scientific study of celestial objects, space, and the physical processes that occur beyond the Earth. Knowledge of astronomy helps adults understand phenomena such as the movement of the Earth, phases of the Moon, eclipses, stars, planets, galaxies, and other features of the universe. Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire scientific knowledge through structured and practical learning experiences. This study will examine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of astronomy, with emphasis on how educational experiences can improve adults’ understanding of basic astronomical concepts and observations. Adult education provides adults with opportunities to develop knowledge and skills through discussions, demonstrations, visual materials, practical activities, and experience-based learning. In astronomy education, adults can be introduced to concepts relating to the solar system, celestial bodies, planetary movements, the Earth’s rotation and revolution, lunar phases, eclipses, and the observation of stars. Such approaches can make abstract astronomical concepts easier to understand and encourage adults to develop greater interest in scientific learning. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of astronomy. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult education contributes positively to adults’ knowledge of astronomy. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of celestial bodies, planetary movements, lunar phases, eclipses, stars, and other basic astronomical concepts. The study may also establish that the use of visual materials, models, demonstrations, and observation activities makes astronomy concepts more understandable and supports adults’ ability to connect theoretical knowledge with observable events in the sky. It will emphasize the importance of incorporating accessible scientific learning activities into adult education programmes to improve adults’ understanding of astronomy. Facilitators may use astronomical models, diagrams, digital resources, observation activities, and interactive discussions to present complex concepts in practical ways. These approaches can encourage curiosity, active participation, and continued interest in scientific learning among adult learners. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, science educators, community learning programmes, educational institutions, and researchers interested in adult scientific literacy. It will recommend the increased use of practical and visual learning resources when introducing astronomical concepts to adults. The study will conclude that effective adult education can play an important role in improving adults’ knowledge of astronomy and strengthening their understanding of celestial phenomena and the scientific principles used to explain the universe.
