Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Agricultural Extension Services
Abstract
Adult education refers to organized learning activities through which adults acquire relevant knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies for personal, economic, and community development. Agricultural extension services are support services that provide farmers and other agricultural participants with information, technical guidance, innovations, and practical knowledge aimed at improving agricultural activities. Adequate knowledge of these services is important because adults involved in agriculture need to know where to obtain relevant information and how extension services can support their farming activities. This study will examine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of agricultural extension services, with the purpose of determining whether adult education can improve adults’ awareness and understanding of available extension services. Adult education can expose adults to different aspects of agricultural extension services, including the functions of extension personnel, sources of agricultural information, advisory services, demonstrations, farm visits, improved production practices, and channels through which farmers can access extension support. Through workshops, group discussions, field-based activities, demonstrations, and community learning programmes, adults can become more familiar with the purpose and usefulness of agricultural extension services. Such learning experiences can also help participants understand how extension information can be obtained and applied to agricultural activities. Adults’ knowledge of agricultural extension services involves their ability to identify available services, recognize the functions of extension personnel, identify appropriate sources of agricultural information, and understand how to access relevant advisory support. Adequate knowledge can enable adults to make better use of available agricultural information and services when planning and carrying out farming activities. Adult education may therefore strengthen this knowledge by providing practical and accessible information that helps adults understand the nature, functions, and accessibility of agricultural extension services. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education and agricultural learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of agricultural extension services. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of agricultural extension services. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of agricultural extension services. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of the functions of extension personnel, available advisory services, sources of agricultural information, extension delivery methods, and procedures for accessing agricultural support. The study is also expected to indicate that practical and community-based learning approaches can make information about extension services easier for adults to understand and use. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, agricultural extension educators, community development workers, and agricultural organizations. Practitioners may incorporate field demonstrations, agricultural information sessions, group discussions, practical problem-solving activities, and community-based learning into adult education programmes. These approaches can help adults develop greater familiarity with agricultural extension services and encourage them to seek appropriate technical information and advisory support when needed. The study will be significant to adult learners, farmers, agricultural extension personnel, Adult Education practitioners, community organizations, and policymakers interested in improving access to agricultural information. It will provide useful information on how adult education can strengthen adults’ knowledge of agricultural extension services and support more informed use of available agricultural resources. The study will recommend the expansion of accessible, practical, and community-oriented adult education programmes that provide clear information about extension services and their accessibility. It will conclude that effective adult education can contribute to better-informed adults and promote greater utilization of agricultural extension services.
