Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Attitudes toward Social Cohesion

Abstract

Social cohesion refers to the degree of connectedness, mutual trust, cooperation, inclusion, and shared responsibility that exists among members of a community or society. Adults’ attitudes toward social cohesion are important because positive attitudes can encourage cooperation, peaceful interaction, community participation, and respect for differences, while weak attitudes may contribute to social division and reduced collective action. Adult Education provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge, exchange experiences, and develop social skills that can influence how they perceive relationships and responsibilities within their communities. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ attitudes toward social cohesion. Adult Education can promote social cohesion through learning experiences that encourage dialogue, cooperation, participation, and understanding among adults from different backgrounds. Group discussions, collaborative activities, community-based learning, problem-solving exercises, and participatory learning can expose adults to different perspectives and encourage constructive interaction. Such experiences may help learners recognize the importance of mutual respect, tolerance, shared responsibility, and cooperation in maintaining positive relationships. Through these educational processes, adults can develop attitudes that support stronger connections within their communities. Adults’ attitudes toward social cohesion involve their willingness to cooperate with others, build trust, participate in shared activities, respect differences, and contribute to collective community goals. Positive attitudes toward social cohesion may strengthen relationships and encourage adults to work with others despite differences in background, opinions, or experiences. Adult Education may influence these attitudes by increasing social awareness, encouraging meaningful interaction, and providing opportunities for adults to learn through cooperation. Consequently, adults who participate actively in educational programmes may develop greater appreciation for collective responsibility and peaceful social relationships. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure participants’ exposure to Adult Education and their attitudes toward social cohesion. The research instrument will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while its reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ attitudes toward social cohesion. The study is expected to establish that participation in Adult Education contributes positively to adults’ attitudes toward social cohesion. It is expected that adults exposed to learning experiences that emphasize dialogue, cooperation, inclusion, and shared responsibility may demonstrate stronger willingness to interact positively with others and participate in collective activities. The findings may also indicate that Adult Education can help adults develop greater appreciation for mutual trust, respect, and cooperation as important elements of cohesive communities. The findings may have important implications for Adult Education practitioners and programme facilitators. Adult learning programmes can incorporate collaborative activities, community discussions, participatory projects, and reflective exercises that encourage learners to appreciate the value of cooperation and social connectedness. Facilitators can also create learning environments where adults with different experiences and perspectives interact constructively. These approaches may strengthen the practical relevance of Adult Education and enable learners to apply social-cohesion principles in their everyday relationships and community activities. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, community organizations, educators, and policymakers interested in strengthening positive social relationships. It is recommended that Adult Education programmes provide learning opportunities that promote dialogue, cooperation, inclusion, mutual respect, and shared community responsibility. The study concludes that Adult Education has the potential to influence adults’ attitudes toward social cohesion by strengthening social awareness, interpersonal understanding, cooperation, and commitment to positive community relationships.
