Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Attitudes toward Gender Stereotypes
Abstract
Adult Education can play an important role in shaping adults’ attitudes toward gender stereotypes and encouraging more balanced perspectives about the roles, abilities, and responsibilities of individuals. Gender stereotypes may influence how adults perceive personal, family, educational, occupational, and community roles, and rigid beliefs about gender can affect interpersonal relationships and participation in different areas of life. Adult Education provides opportunities for learners to examine established beliefs, consider alternative perspectives, and reflect on the effects of stereotypical expectations. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ attitudes toward gender stereotypes. Adult Education can expose learners to concepts related to gender roles, equality, social expectations, individual capabilities, and the influence of cultural and social beliefs on attitudes. Through discussions, case studies, group activities, reflective exercises, and analysis of everyday situations, adults can examine common assumptions about what people of different genders should or should not do. These learning experiences can encourage learners to question rigid stereotypes and consider individual abilities and circumstances rather than relying solely on generalized expectations. Exposure to diverse perspectives may also promote greater awareness of how stereotypes can influence decisions and social interactions. Adults’ attitudes toward gender stereotypes refer to their beliefs, perceptions, and dispositions concerning generalized assumptions about the roles, abilities, behaviours, and responsibilities associated with different genders. Positive changes in these attitudes may involve greater willingness to recognize individual differences, question restrictive assumptions, and support fair opportunities regardless of gender. Adult Education may influence such attitudes by encouraging critical reflection on previously held beliefs and providing opportunities to examine alternative perspectives. Developing more informed attitudes can contribute to respectful interactions and more equitable participation in family, workplace, educational, and community settings. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adult learners participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure participants’ exposure to Adult Education and their attitudes toward gender stereotypes. The research instrument will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while its reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ attitudes toward gender stereotypes. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ attitudes toward gender stereotypes. It is anticipated that adults exposed to relevant educational experiences will demonstrate greater awareness of stereotypical assumptions and increased willingness to examine and question rigid gender-based expectations. The study may further establish that discussions, reflective activities, and exposure to different perspectives can encourage adults to develop more balanced attitudes toward gender roles and individual capabilities. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners in designing learning experiences that encourage critical examination of social beliefs and stereotypes. Practitioners may incorporate discussions, case studies, reflective activities, group exercises, and real-life scenarios that allow adults to examine how gender stereotypes influence perceptions and behaviour. Such activities can create opportunities for learners to reflect on their attitudes, consider alternative viewpoints, and develop more respectful approaches to interactions involving people of different genders. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, families, workplaces, community organizations, and other stakeholders concerned with social inclusion and equitable participation. It is expected to recommend greater integration of reflective and discussion-based activities that enable adults to examine gender stereotypes and develop informed attitudes toward gender-related expectations. The study concludes that Adult Education can contribute to positive changes in adults’ attitudes toward gender stereotypes by promoting awareness, critical reflection, openness to alternative perspectives, and greater recognition of individual abilities and opportunities.
