Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Appreciation of Indigenous Languages

Abstract

Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge that can strengthen their awareness and appreciation of linguistic and cultural diversity. Indigenous languages are languages that originate within particular communities and are transmitted across generations as important means of communication, cultural expression, identity, and knowledge transmission. Declining appreciation of indigenous languages may contribute to reduced interest in their use, transmission, and continued recognition within communities. The study therefore aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ appreciation of indigenous languages. Adult education can expose learners to indigenous languages through language lessons, storytelling, oral traditions, cultural discussions, reading activities, songs, proverbs, and interactions with speakers of local languages. These learning experiences can help adults understand the historical, cultural, communicative, and social value of indigenous languages. By connecting formal and non-formal learning with local linguistic experiences, adult education can encourage learners to recognize indigenous languages as valuable components of community knowledge and cultural expression. Appreciation of indigenous languages involves recognizing their value, showing respect for their continued use, acknowledging their cultural significance, and developing a positive disposition toward their preservation and transmission. Adults who appreciate indigenous languages may demonstrate greater respect for local linguistic expressions and greater willingness to learn about or encourage their continued use. Adult education can influence such appreciation by providing learners with knowledge about the role of indigenous languages in transmitting cultural values, histories, traditions, and community knowledge. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure adults’ exposure to adult education and their appreciation of indigenous languages. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Descriptive statistics will be used to answer the research questions, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be employed to test the hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ appreciation of indigenous languages. Adults exposed to relevant educational experiences are expected to demonstrate greater recognition of the cultural, historical, communicative, and social value of indigenous languages. The study is also expected to indicate that educational exposure can encourage more positive attitudes toward indigenous languages and strengthen adults’ willingness to recognize their importance within community life. The findings are expected to have implications for the teaching and learning of adult education by emphasizing the value of incorporating indigenous language content into appropriate learning programmes. Adult educators may use storytelling, songs, proverbs, oral history, language activities, and discussions with indigenous language speakers to expose learners to the richness and relevance of local languages. Such approaches can make adult learning more culturally responsive and provide meaningful opportunities for adults to connect language learning with their community experiences. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, indigenous language speakers, cultural organizations, community groups, and adult education programme planners. Adult learners may develop greater appreciation for the value of indigenous languages, while adult educators may gain useful information for developing culturally relevant learning activities. Indigenous language speakers and cultural organizations may benefit from increased recognition of local languages, while programme planners may use the findings to strengthen adult education programmes that support linguistic and cultural awareness. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate appropriate indigenous language learning activities and provide adults with opportunities to explore the cultural significance of local languages. Adult educators should use participatory approaches such as storytelling, language practice, songs, proverbs, oral history, and community interaction to encourage positive attitudes toward indigenous languages. Learning activities should respect linguistic diversity and avoid presenting one indigenous language as superior to another. It is concluded that adult education can serve as an important avenue for improving adults’ appreciation of indigenous languages and strengthening recognition of their cultural and communicative value.
