Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Understand Official Correspondence

Abstract

The ability to understand official correspondence is an important functional literacy skill because it enables adults to correctly interpret formal information communicated by government institutions, educational organizations, workplaces, financial institutions, and other formal bodies. Adult education provides learners with literacy, reading, and comprehension skills that can improve their ability to process formal written communication. However, some adults may experience difficulties understanding official letters because of formal language, unfamiliar expressions, lengthy messages, or complex information. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to understand official correspondence. Adult education exposes learners to structured reading and comprehension activities that can strengthen their ability to process different forms of formal written communication. Through guided activities, learners may practise identifying the sender and purpose of a correspondence, recognizing important information, interpreting instructions, identifying dates and requirements, and distinguishing key messages from supporting details. Regular exposure to formal texts can help adults develop systematic approaches to understanding official communication. The ability to understand official correspondence refers to the capacity to read, interpret, and derive the intended meaning from formal written communications. Effective understanding involves identifying the purpose of a message, recognizing important information, interpreting instructions and requirements, and determining the actions expected of the recipient. Adult education is expected to influence this ability by strengthening learners’ functional reading comprehension and their capacity to process formal written information. The study will adopt a quasi-experimental research design. The population will consist of adult learners enrolled in selected adult education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected. Data will be collected using an official-correspondence comprehension assessment administered before and after exposure to relevant adult education activities. The data obtained will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to understand official correspondence. The study is expected to establish that adult learners exposed to adult education demonstrate improved ability to understand official correspondence compared with their performance before the intervention. The findings are expected to show improvements in identifying the purpose of formal messages, interpreting important details, understanding instructions and requirements, and determining appropriate responses. This would suggest that adult education can contribute positively to adults’ ability to process formal written communication. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education programmes. Adult education instructors may incorporate appropriately selected examples of official correspondence into functional literacy and comprehension activities. Learners can be given opportunities to identify key information, interpret formal expressions, determine required actions, and explain the meaning of different correspondence. Such activities can make literacy instruction more practical and relevant to everyday situations. Adult learners, adult education instructors, programme coordinators, curriculum developers, and educational administrators are expected to benefit from the findings. Adult learners may develop stronger abilities to understand formal written communication, while instructors may gain practical approaches for strengthening functional reading skills. Programme coordinators and curriculum developers may also use the findings to incorporate official correspondence into relevant adult education learning activities. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate practical exercises involving the interpretation of official correspondence. Instructors should guide learners in identifying the purpose of correspondence, extracting important information, understanding formal instructions, and determining appropriate responses. It is concluded that adult education can play an important role in improving adults’ ability to understand official correspondence and strengthening their capacity to manage formal written communication effectively.
