Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Summarize Learning Materials

Abstract

The ability to summarize learning materials is an important learning skill because it enables adults to identify essential information and present major ideas in a shorter and clearer form. Adult education provides learners with knowledge and practical learning experiences that can strengthen their ability to understand and process educational materials. However, some adult learners may find it difficult to distinguish important ideas from supporting details when studying lengthy texts, notes, or other learning resources. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to summarize learning materials. Adult education exposes learners to structured activities that encourage reading, interpretation, identification of key points, and concise presentation of information. Through guided learning activities, adults can learn to identify main ideas, select relevant supporting details, eliminate unnecessary information, and arrange important points logically. Regular engagement with learning materials can provide opportunities for learners to practise transforming lengthy information into shorter and meaningful summaries. The ability to summarize learning materials refers to the capacity to identify the central ideas and important supporting information in a learning resource and express them concisely without changing the original meaning. Effective summarization requires understanding the material, distinguishing essential information from less important details, and organizing selected ideas coherently. Adult education is expected to influence this ability by providing learners with opportunities to read, analyse, discuss, and present information in condensed forms. The study will adopt a quasi-experimental research design. The population will consist of adult learners enrolled in selected adult education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected. Data will be collected using a summarization assessment administered before and after exposure to relevant adult education activities. The data obtained will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to summarize learning materials. The study is expected to establish that adult learners exposed to structured adult education activities demonstrate improved ability to summarize learning materials. The findings are expected to show improvements in identifying main ideas, selecting relevant details, reducing unnecessary information, and presenting information in a concise and logically organized manner. This would indicate that adult education can contribute to the development of practical summarization skills among adult learners. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education programmes. Adult education instructors may incorporate summarization exercises into reading, discussion, and written learning activities. Learners can be given opportunities to summarize textbooks, articles, lesson notes, and other educational materials using their own words. Such activities may strengthen understanding while also helping learners develop practical skills for processing large amounts of information. Adult learners, adult education instructors, programme coordinators, curriculum developers, and educational administrators are expected to benefit from the findings. Adult learners may develop stronger abilities to process and condense information, while instructors may gain useful approaches for teaching summarization skills. Programme coordinators and curriculum developers may also use the findings to strengthen study-skills components of adult education programmes. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate regular summarization activities into learning sessions. Instructors should guide learners in identifying main ideas, selecting relevant information, eliminating unnecessary details, and presenting concise summaries while maintaining the original meaning. It is concluded that adult education can play an important role in improving adults’ ability to summarize learning materials and support more effective learning and information processing.
