Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Respond Appropriately to Verbal Criticism
Abstract
Verbal criticism is a common feature of interpersonal, workplace, family, and community interactions, and the manner in which adults respond to criticism can influence relationships, decision-making, and personal development. While constructive criticism can provide useful information for improvement, poorly managed responses may lead to defensiveness, conflict, emotional reactions, or breakdowns in communication. Adult Education can equip adults with knowledge and skills that support self-awareness, active listening, emotional regulation, and constructive communication when receiving criticism. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ ability to respond appropriately to verbal criticism. Adult Education provides opportunities for adults to develop communication, interpersonal, and reflective skills through discussions, group activities, role-playing, demonstrations, and practical learning experiences. Such educational activities can help learners understand different forms of criticism and examine appropriate ways of responding to comments about their behaviour, performance, decisions, or actions. Adults may learn to listen without immediate interruption, identify useful information within criticism, ask questions where necessary, and communicate their responses respectfully. These learning experiences may also encourage adults to consider criticism objectively rather than reacting solely on the basis of emotion. Adults’ ability to respond appropriately to verbal criticism refers to their capacity to listen to critical comments, understand their meaning, evaluate their relevance, and respond in a calm and constructive manner. Appropriate responses may involve acknowledging valid concerns, seeking clarification, explaining one’s position respectfully, accepting responsibility where necessary, or disagreeing without becoming unnecessarily confrontational. Adult Education may strengthen this ability by developing critical reflection, emotional awareness, communication competence, and problem-solving skills. These competencies can help adults manage criticism more effectively while maintaining respectful relationships. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adult learners participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to respond appropriately to verbal criticism. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ ability to respond appropriately to verbal criticism. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ ability to respond appropriately to verbal criticism. It is anticipated that adults exposed to relevant educational experiences will demonstrate greater ability to listen carefully, distinguish constructive comments from personal reactions, seek clarification, and provide respectful responses. The study may further establish that practical activities such as role-playing and guided discussions help adults develop confidence in handling criticism and reduce tendencies toward immediate defensiveness, hostility, or withdrawal during challenging interactions. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners in designing learning activities that strengthen adults’ interpersonal and communication competence. Adult Education programmes can incorporate realistic criticism scenarios, role-playing exercises, reflective discussions, active-listening activities, and problem-solving tasks that allow learners to practice different ways of responding to verbal criticism. These approaches can help adults transfer classroom learning to workplace, family, community, and other everyday situations where critical feedback may occur. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, workplaces, families, community organizations, and other groups interested in promoting constructive communication and positive interpersonal relationships. It is expected to recommend greater emphasis on active listening, emotional awareness, respectful disagreement, constructive feedback, and reflective response strategies within relevant Adult Education programmes. The study concludes that Adult Education can provide adults with practical knowledge and skills for responding appropriately to verbal criticism, thereby supporting healthier communication, improved relationships, and more constructive approaches to personal and social development.
