Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Refuse Unreasonable Requests

Abstract

Unreasonable requests are demands that may place inappropriate pressure on individuals, disregard their legitimate interests, exceed agreed responsibilities, or require actions that they are not reasonably obligated to perform. Adults encounter such requests in workplaces, families, friendships, community settings, and other social interactions, making the ability to respond appropriately an important interpersonal skill. Difficulty refusing unreasonable requests may result in unnecessary pressure, overcommitment, frustration, or involvement in unwanted activities. Adult Education can equip adults with communication, decision-making, assertiveness, and critical-thinking skills that may strengthen their ability to evaluate and appropriately refuse unreasonable requests. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ ability to refuse unreasonable requests. Adult Education provides learning experiences that can develop adults’ understanding of effective communication, assertive expression, personal decision-making, and interpersonal relationships. Through discussions, role-playing, case studies, demonstrations, and practical exercises, adults can learn how to evaluate requests before agreeing to them and identify circumstances in which refusal may be appropriate. Learners may also practice communicating refusal clearly, giving brief explanations where necessary, suggesting alternatives, and maintaining respectful interaction while standing by their decisions. These educational experiences can help adults develop greater confidence in responding to unreasonable demands without unnecessary confrontation. Adults’ ability to refuse unreasonable requests refers to their capacity to recognize when a request is inappropriate or unjustified and communicate a clear and respectful refusal. This ability involves evaluating the nature of the request, considering personal responsibilities and circumstances, making an informed decision, and expressing that decision appropriately. Adult Education may strengthen these abilities by encouraging critical reflection, assertive communication, and awareness of personal responsibilities and choices. Improved refusal skills can help adults manage interpersonal pressure more effectively while maintaining appropriate and respectful relationships. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adult learners participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to refuse unreasonable requests. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ ability to refuse unreasonable requests. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ ability to refuse unreasonable requests. It is anticipated that adults exposed to relevant educational experiences will demonstrate improved ability to evaluate requests, identify unreasonable demands, communicate refusal clearly, and maintain respectful interaction while declining inappropriate requests. The study may further establish that practical activities such as role-playing and scenario-based discussions help adults develop greater confidence in applying refusal skills in workplace, family, community, and social situations. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners in designing learning activities that strengthen practical decision-making and interpersonal communication. Adult Education programmes can incorporate realistic scenarios, role-playing exercises, assertiveness practice, group discussions, and reflective activities that allow learners to examine different types of requests and practice appropriate responses. These approaches can help adults distinguish between reasonable cooperation and inappropriate pressure while developing communication strategies for expressing refusal respectfully. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, workplaces, families, community organizations, and other groups concerned with effective interpersonal communication and responsible decision-making. It is expected to recommend greater emphasis on assertive communication, critical evaluation of requests, decision-making, respectful refusal, and practical interpersonal skills within relevant Adult Education programmes. The study concludes that Adult Education can provide adults with useful knowledge and competencies for evaluating and refusing unreasonable requests appropriately, thereby supporting greater confidence, responsible decision-making, and healthier interpersonal interactions.
