Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Recognize Manipulative Behaviour

Abstract

Manipulative behaviour involves deliberate attempts to influence, control, pressure, or deceive another person for personal advantage, and the ability to recognize such behaviour is important for making informed and independent decisions. Adults may encounter manipulation in personal relationships, workplaces, social interactions, commercial activities, and online environments, yet limited awareness of common manipulative patterns may make it difficult to identify inappropriate influence. Adult Education can provide adults with relevant knowledge, critical awareness, communication skills, and practical understanding that may strengthen their ability to recognize manipulative behaviour. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ ability to recognize manipulative behaviour. Adult Education can expose learners to concepts related to interpersonal communication, critical thinking, decision-making, emotional awareness, and evaluation of information. Through discussions, case studies, role-playing activities, group exercises, and practical examples, adults can examine different forms of influence and distinguish between healthy persuasion and manipulative conduct. Such learning experiences may help participants identify behaviours such as excessive pressure, emotional exploitation, deception, intimidation, guilt-based influence, and deliberate withholding or distortion of information. Adult Education may therefore provide practical opportunities for adults to develop greater awareness of behavioural patterns that require careful evaluation. Adults’ ability to recognize manipulative behaviour refers to their capacity to identify inappropriate attempts to influence their thoughts, emotions, choices, or actions. This ability requires adults to pay attention to communication patterns, assess the intentions behind particular behaviours, recognize warning signs, and consider whether a situation respects personal choice and autonomy. Adult Education may strengthen these abilities by encouraging reflective thinking, questioning, evidence-based judgment, and awareness of interpersonal boundaries. Improved recognition may also enable adults to respond more appropriately to potentially manipulative situations rather than accepting pressure without careful consideration. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adult learners participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to recognize manipulative behaviour. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ ability to recognize manipulative behaviour. The study is expected to establish that participation in Adult Education is associated with improved ability to identify common indicators of manipulative behaviour. It is anticipated that adults exposed to relevant educational experiences will demonstrate greater awareness of inappropriate influence, stronger ability to evaluate interpersonal situations, and improved capacity to distinguish manipulation from legitimate persuasion or ordinary disagreement. The study may further indicate that practical and discussion-based learning experiences are particularly useful in helping adults apply knowledge to situations involving pressure, deception, emotional influence, and controlling behaviour. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners in designing learning activities that develop practical judgment and interpersonal awareness. Adult Education programmes can incorporate realistic scenarios, case discussions, role-playing exercises, reflective activities, and problem-solving tasks that allow learners to examine different forms of influence and practice identifying warning signs. Such approaches may make learning more relevant to adults’ everyday experiences and encourage participants to evaluate situations carefully before accepting demands, making decisions, or responding to interpersonal pressure. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, community organizations, families, workplaces, and other groups interested in strengthening adults’ decision-making and interpersonal awareness. It is expected to recommend greater inclusion of practical content on communication, critical evaluation, personal autonomy, and recognition of inappropriate influence within relevant Adult Education programmes. The study concludes that Adult Education can serve as an important avenue for developing adults’ awareness and judgment in situations involving manipulative behaviour, thereby supporting more informed, confident, and responsible responses to interpersonal influence.
