Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Mobilize Resources for Community Activities

Abstract

Adult Education refers to organized learning opportunities that enable adults to acquire knowledge, skills, and competencies for personal, social, economic, and community development, while resource mobilization refers to the process of identifying, obtaining, coordinating, and utilizing available human, material, financial, and institutional resources to support community activities. The ability to mobilize resources is important because community activities often depend on the effective coordination of available resources to achieve desired objectives. However, some adults may have limited knowledge and skills required to identify potential sources of support, coordinate available resources, and obtain contributions for community activities. Therefore, this study aims to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ ability to mobilize resources for community activities. Adult Education provides adults with opportunities to develop knowledge and practical skills through classroom instruction, workshops, discussions, group activities, and community-based learning. These educational experiences can introduce learners to basic principles of resource identification, planning, networking, fundraising, communication, negotiation, and resource coordination. Through practical activities, adults can learn how to assess community needs, identify potential sources of support, communicate community objectives, and organize available resources toward specific activities. The ability to mobilize resources involves recognizing available resources, identifying potential contributors, establishing useful connections, communicating resource needs, obtaining support, and coordinating contributions effectively. Adults who possess relevant educational knowledge may be better equipped to organize community support and make appropriate use of available resources. Adult Education can therefore strengthen resource-mobilization ability by providing adults with practical knowledge and skills for planning, communication, networking, coordination, and community-oriented action. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education and community development programmes, from which a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure participation in Adult Education and adults’ ability to mobilize resources for community activities. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a significant positive effect on adults’ ability to mobilize resources for community activities. Adults who participate in relevant adult education programmes are expected to demonstrate greater ability to identify potential sources of support, communicate resource needs, establish useful networks, obtain contributions, and coordinate available resources. The study may further indicate that practical community-based learning activities strengthen adults’ confidence and competence in mobilizing resources for community initiatives. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in Adult Education by emphasizing the importance of incorporating practical resource-mobilization activities into community-oriented learning programmes. Adult educators may use community projects, fundraising exercises, networking activities, group planning, and resource-mapping tasks to provide learners with opportunities to practise resource-mobilization skills. Such approaches can help adults connect educational knowledge with practical community development activities. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, community development practitioners, community organizations, local leaders, and policymakers. Adult learners may acquire improved abilities to organize resources for community activities, while adult educators and community development practitioners may gain useful approaches for strengthening resource-mobilization education. Community organizations and local development groups may also benefit from adults who are better equipped to identify and coordinate resources for community initiatives. The study will recommend that Adult Education programmes incorporate practical resource-mobilization activities into relevant community development and leadership courses. Adult educators should provide learners with opportunities to practise resource identification, networking, communication, fundraising, negotiation, and resource coordination. Community-based projects should also be encouraged to enable adults to apply these skills in practical situations. The study concludes that effective Adult Education can strengthen adults’ ability to mobilize resources and contribute more effectively to the planning and implementation of community activities.
