Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Manage Difficult Conversations
Abstract
Difficult conversations are interactions involving sensitive, uncomfortable, or potentially conflicting issues that may create emotional tension between individuals. Adults encounter such conversations in families, workplaces, educational settings, communities, and other social environments, making the ability to manage them appropriately an important interpersonal competence. Poorly managed difficult conversations may result in misunderstanding, hostility, avoidance, or damaged relationships. Adult Education can provide adults with knowledge and practical skills in communication, active listening, emotional awareness, problem-solving, and conflict management that may improve their ability to handle challenging interactions. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ ability to manage difficult conversations. Adult Education provides opportunities for adults to develop communication competencies through discussions, role-playing, case studies, demonstrations, group activities, and reflective exercises. These learning experiences can expose learners to strategies for preparing for difficult conversations, identifying the central issue, expressing concerns clearly, listening to different perspectives, and maintaining respectful communication. Adults can also learn how to ask appropriate questions, manage emotional reactions, avoid unnecessary accusations, and focus on resolving the issue rather than escalating disagreement. Such educational experiences may enable adults to approach challenging conversations with greater awareness and confidence. Adults’ ability to manage difficult conversations refers to their capacity to approach sensitive interactions calmly, communicate their concerns clearly, listen to others, regulate their responses, and work toward constructive understanding or resolution. Effective management may involve choosing appropriate language, acknowledging different perspectives, asking clarifying questions, maintaining respect, and identifying possible solutions. Adult Education may strengthen these abilities by encouraging reflection, practical communication practice, and critical consideration of different responses to challenging situations. Improved competence in managing difficult conversations can support healthier interpersonal relationships and more productive social interactions. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adult learners participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to manage difficult conversations. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ ability to manage difficult conversations. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ ability to manage difficult conversations. It is anticipated that adults exposed to relevant educational experiences will demonstrate improved ability to communicate sensitive issues respectfully, listen to opposing viewpoints, regulate emotional responses, ask useful questions, and seek constructive solutions. The study may further establish that practical learning activities such as role-playing and case analysis help adults develop greater confidence in handling conversations involving disagreement, criticism, sensitive concerns, or conflicting interests. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners in designing learning experiences that strengthen practical interpersonal and communication competencies. Adult Education programmes can incorporate realistic conversation scenarios, role-playing exercises, guided discussions, conflict-resolution activities, and reflective tasks that allow learners to practice managing challenging interactions. These approaches can help adults transfer communication knowledge into everyday family, workplace, community, and social situations while encouraging respectful dialogue and constructive problem-solving. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, families, workplaces, community organizations, and other groups concerned with effective interpersonal communication and peaceful interaction. It is expected to recommend greater emphasis on active listening, emotional awareness, respectful expression, conflict management, questioning, and problem-solving within relevant Adult Education programmes. The study concludes that Adult Education can provide adults with useful knowledge and practical competencies for managing difficult conversations in a calm, respectful, and constructive manner, thereby supporting improved relationships and more effective communication.
