Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Interpret Job Advertisements
Abstract
Adult education provides adults with knowledge and skills that can support their participation in employment and other areas of economic life, while the ability to interpret job advertisements refers to the capacity to understand and correctly identify information contained in advertisements for employment opportunities. Job advertisements commonly provide details about job duties, qualifications, skills, experience, application procedures, and employment conditions, making their interpretation an important skill for job seekers. However, some adults may experience difficulties understanding the information presented in job advertisements, which may affect their ability to assess suitable employment opportunities. Therefore, this study aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to interpret job advertisements. Adult education equips learners with functional knowledge, communication skills, reading skills, and practical information that can be applied to everyday employment situations. Through classroom instruction, practical exercises, career-related discussions, and exposure to employment information, adults can develop the ability to locate, understand, and apply information presented in different forms. Such learning experiences can help adults become more confident when dealing with employment-related materials and improve their capacity to understand written information associated with job opportunities. The ability to interpret job advertisements involves understanding the meaning of information provided by employers and identifying important details such as job responsibilities, educational qualifications, required skills, experience, application instructions, and deadlines. Adults who can effectively interpret job advertisements are better able to determine whether a position matches their qualifications and capabilities. Adult education may therefore improve this ability by strengthening reading comprehension, critical interpretation, vocabulary, and practical application of employment-related information. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education programmes within the study area. A sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure, while data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and relevant assessment items designed to measure participation in adult education and the ability to interpret job advertisements. The data collected will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, with the relevant hypothesis tested at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ ability to interpret job advertisements. Adults who participate in adult education programmes are expected to demonstrate improved ability to understand job descriptions, identify required qualifications and skills, recognize application instructions, and determine whether employment opportunities are appropriate for their capabilities. The findings are expected to have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators may incorporate authentic job advertisements into learning activities and guide learners through exercises involving the identification and interpretation of job duties, qualifications, skills, experience, and application requirements. Practical activities of this nature can make learning more relevant to adults’ employment needs and strengthen the application of literacy and communication skills in real-life situations. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, career guidance practitioners, employment support organisations, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from improved ability to understand employment opportunities, while adult educators may gain useful information for developing employment-oriented learning activities. Career guidance practitioners and policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen employment information and career-support initiatives for adults. The study will recommend that adult education programmes include practical activities focused on interpreting job advertisements and understanding employment-related information. Adult educators should expose learners to different forms of job advertisements and encourage them to identify key requirements, responsibilities, qualifications, and application procedures. The study will conclude that adult education can play an important role in strengthening adults’ ability to interpret job advertisements and make more informed employment choices.
